Episode 6x14 / Re: Is MIB dead or Smokey?
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:19:07 PM »
I was sure that the Brother was dead and gone, and the Smoke is the evil of the world after I watched the episode.  AND THEN I come on here and become all persuaded.  It's just a few simple things.

1. Momma Bear made it so that they can't kill each other.
2. Fate worse than death.  Worse than, not a fate OF death.
3. Smoke/MIB disgruntled anger with Jacob.  He stole my humanity, betrayed me, trapped me.

Someone made a good point early was Jacob's intention to have his brother go into the Light.  If Jacob was...I dunno, standing by the stream washing that hard man body of his off and saw his Brother floating towards the Light he would be innocent of brother's fate.  But forcefully thrusting him into the light, TELLING him to leave pretty much sums it up.

for the ppl that think the smoke monster is not the man in black...i disagree.
smokey still wants to leave. still cant kill jacob. sure it was taking the form of his old body in "the incident" and "ab aterno", but its still his own soul. he turned into the smoke monster.

Well said. Remember the butterfly we saw in Ab Aeterno? Seemed a bit random at the time, but now it looks like excellent symbolism, doesn't it?
BAM!  Let me just pick my brains up off of the floor!

Is there any way we can get one of the cave AFTER MIB was pushed into it? I need to know if the light went out, or if it was just obscured by Smokey coming out.

I know what you're talking about, there was a point just BEFORE the smoke came out where it looked like the light flickered and went out.  The photos shown so far don't show the exact moment you're looking for.  Aw hell, I don't know if it means anything anyway!
I think that if it DID go out that'd be that.  And even if we didn't cease to be MIB wouldn't have found that light in the well. So the light is still there.  I think the flickering we were seeing is like...the light processing wtf just happened, the smoke forming and then expelling.

So basically she was shaving her legs because she was preparing to leave the godly state and step into the land of the dead???
I have no idea! I'm not even sure if she WAS shaving her legs!  But I can't wait to watch that episode commentary when the season comes out!

It appears that MIB knows a lot of stuff about the island. he stated that a couple of times last night. he just knows. So i think he knows everything about the island.
Good point.

Even if MIB didn't know about the exchange between Mother and Jacob it still stands for symbolism of his refusal to protect the island to the viewers.

Good summary, creflo.

Remember that the finale will be the length of a full feature film.  And dang, they create, mount, and resolve plots in those things all the time!  On top of that we get one more regular episode.  I'm excited to see what they do with their remaining time.  Hopefully, balls-to-the-wall style.

nom- I KNOW, RIGHT?  I thought that was what she might be doing... not sure what they were trying to portray there.  Maybe her feminine side?  Maybe that she was a regular person at one point and is holding onto that in a small way?  Maybe that's what she weaves with?

But check out this most likely irrelevant summary of "hair symbolism" in some book about the gods:
He comments upon the hair several times, and when asked what he would do to his prisoner, his immediate response is: "first I shall cut off your delicate locks," to which Dionysus responds, "my long hair is sacred; I am growing it for the god." This exchange proves a revelation, for while the Stranger could have been growing his hair as a promise to a god, as was common practice, his hair is long simply because he is the god himself.

Chang said that there was a lot of energy under the orchid, than Faraday said that the energy under the swan was
thousands times higher.
Could the Swan be build over the lightcave? Desmond had to push that button to keep it contained to save the world and when he turned the failsafekey he released the light and the sky turned purple, the island became visible to the world and he travelled in time.
In 1977 Juliet contained it by using Jughead and the Dharma build the swan over it.
I always remember Locke saying that they were all brought there for a reaon by the island as part of a chain and that the
path would end at the hatch.

Anything is possible Opie, but my thought is that since MiB was going to install the Wheel into the light in that cave, then the Orchid is built near there, and since we know the Swan and The Orchid are on different sides of the island, my answer to you on this matter is, no, the Swan is not built my opinion.
They built several wells trying to access the Light.  They were able to find these places because it was magnetic.  I'm imagining the light similar to magma under the earth.  Places in the earth's crust are closer to these pockets than others, the extreme being a volcano.  So I imagine the Light in the stream as sort of the "volcano" of the island.  And where they dug the wells they touched upon chambers where the light was closer to the surface, or stronger.  The wheel and later the Orchid were above one such well.  I'm thinking since the swan was so powerful it may have been above the original Stream Light.  Either that or it's where the temple is!  I dunno!

I actually quite like the way Jacob has been played and developed.  (DON'T SHOOT!)  I had always imagined Jacob would be a god-like brilliant being, with the best wishes of humanity at heart.  But ever since we saw him sitting on the beach last season we know that's now who he is.  He took the job reluctantly.  He felt, rightly so it seems, that he was never MEANT to take on that responsibility.  It ended up being thrown at him.  He loved his mother enough and had enough belief in what she said to take up the reigns.

The difference between him and his brother was that Jacob was willing to remain, while his brother wanted to know more.  Is it really a sin or a crime to choose to do either?

Jacob's actor has started to show him not as some high immortal, but as a child born on the island with only the direction of his mother to guide him.  He doesn't WANT this, but he feels he MUST do it.  He's just as much the reluctant "hero" as Jack.  He is flawed, that's what makes him a more interesting character.  Especially one that holds such a huge part of the mythology.

OK, so now that we have established this, can anyone explain why during that conversation the smoke takes the position "They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same."  This is what Mother tells the two boys, so you'd think that this would be Jacob's position.  But instead Jacob doesn't believe this stance.  What's up with that!?

My theory is that the Mother was both the protector of the island and the smokey. She was the light and the dark in one. The island was "in harmony" while she was around.  This would explain why she was able to kill all of the people at the well, since she did it as smokey.

So, when she died, perhaps the traits/responsibilities split between Jacob and his brother. Jacob was the light, his brother the dark.  So, Jacob took certain aspects of his mother, and MiB took the other, which included the pessimistic view of men.

This is kind of what I was thinking.

I like that idea!
It also seems to me that Jacob has had quite a bit of interaction with the following humans on the island.  It's almost like he regretted what happened with his brother and took up where he left off, becoming a part of society.  They came to regard him as a leader.  He had more time than his brother did to be with people.  MIB only had 30 years.  Perhaps he started to see the better side of humanity.  Like MIB told him, "one day you can have your own game and make the rules."  Jacob took that up in a way.  He's got to find a replacement for himself- one that can live up to the task.  If he felt that all humanity is good for is fighting and corrupting he wouldn't bother.

I assumed that MIBs remark to jacob about his people being bad/corrupt/destructive was because he wanted to leave and his family (im assuming his dad was shipwrecked too) /friends were travelling to a new world to start a new life and just wanted to set up camp to live out days ( not look for rescue or a way off)...

It must have been quite a culture shock for him to see the settlement.  He has lived his whole life under his mother's wing.  Mom was rearing them up to be possible protectors after her reign was over.  (What did one snowman say to the other snowman?)  They lived a life that was sheltered.  It was probably surprising to see a society where people get drunk, fights break out, people fish for their own fish etc.  I guess he was so ready to see the bad in humanity (thanks, mom!) he over looked a lot of the good.  He did touch on their thirst for knowledge, their curiosity.  After what we saw it's pretty easy to see why maybe Jacob hates technology!

On the beach Richard is wrapped up in a blanket (this is after the baptism) and Jacob gives him a cup.  I guess I thought it was water but it was probably the wine.

Keep in mind that at the birth of the show they didn't have any idea how long it would air.  We all could have hated the end of season 2 and the network could have dropped the show.  At that point in the series they were really more concerned with the characters we saw on screen and keeping the story moving as well as they could.  It was only when the six season deadline was given that they were really able to embellish the story to what we have today.  When Tolkien wrote the Hobbit he wasn't planning on creating the Lord of the Rings books.  That doesn't make them any less enchanting than they are.

I liked seeing the origin of "They come, they fight, they destroy, corrupt..."

Pretty chilling every time Mother said "I'm sorry."  And her crazy way of saying that the game was a gift from her, "where else would it be from?"

I liked the "there's nothing across the sea" bit.  Brought me back to Rosseau's song that Shannon translated way back when.  Nice overall tie in for the series.

Whoa good recall about the Smokey drain under the temple wall.  Looking back now at those pictures depicting what looked like the Smoke/Snake chatting it up with an Egyptian goddie thing...
I would say that The smoke took on the form of "whoever" and went about his business with the wheel with the help of the egyptians.  Those pictures show that the Smoke had some interaction with the people there, and they even built a "drain" for the smoke.  Who knows what happened to them after that?  Maybe smokey went postal after the construction was complete and he couldn't achieve his goal of leaving the island.
