Title: Cerebus
Post by: musepsycho on September 09, 2007, 10:06:11 AM
This is one of my favorite comic books. Basically, it's a 'funny animal' comic about Cerebus the Aardvark(!). But it really isn't like anything else I've read... It's a chronicle that tells about his life from being a barbarian to president to pope & eventually his death (that really isn't a spoiler & won't ruin the enjoyment). It's written & drawn by the Canadian Dave Sim, later on helped by background artist Gerard. It's really hard to be brief about this comic because it's so rich. It starts out as a parody on Conan the Barbarian, but quickly expands to parody/reference other comics (Prince Valiant, the Marvel Universe, Sandman...) & other pop culture phenomena (like the Marx Brothers) while at the same time getting a life on its own. At times it's more like an illustrated novel.

The whole thing is 6000 pages, collected in 16 books (should keep you busy until February!). The first four books (Cerebus, High Society, Church & State I & Church & State II) are very enjoyable! After this the pace is slows down considerably, I know a lot of people gave up on the comic then but I still think they are worth the while.

You can read more on Wikipedia (

If you wonder why I post it here it's because Damon Lindelof mispronounced 'Cerberus' on ComicCon & said 'Cerebus' so I guess he has read the book, but I'm pretty sure there are no clues to Lost in it.

Yes, and I too is the favourite book. When it you read, it would not be desirable to close.
