Running Away
Kate is the classic character who is always running away. She was a fugitive from the law, and has not stayed in one place for long since. One of the episodes about her is even called "Born to Run." When the raft is built, she thinks of a plan to change her ID to deceased Joanna's, allowing her more options of escape if she should get on the raft, but Sawyer discovers her plan first.
In "The Greater Good," Agent Cole says to Sayid, "7 years since you left Iraq -- 6 months here, 3 months there -- always moving. There's only two reasons a man would do that, Sayid. Either he's running away from something, or looking for something." (refering to Nadia)
Desmond first meets Jack in a flashback in "Man of Science, Man of Faith," while they are both running up and down the stadium steps. He asks Jack: "So what's your excuse?... To run like the devil's chasing you."
In "Orientation," Jack asks Desmond, "Why are you running? You don't even know what you're running from!" a statement which trigger's Desmond's memory of where they had met.
In "The Long Con," Sawyer tells Kate, "You run. I con. Tiger don't change their stripes."
In "The Whole Truth," Ana-Lucia is seen running along the beach, and Locke tells her, "You were running like the devil's chasing you." She responds, "Maybe he is."
In "Two for the Road," Ana-Lucia runs away to work for airport security, and later with Christian to Australia, rather than face her mother's confrontation about the shooting of Jason McCormick.
In "Live Together, Die Alone," Charles Widmore tries to pay Desmond to "just run away" and never see his daughter again. When Desmond asks why he would run away, Widmore says, "Because you're a coward." Penelope asks Desmond "What are you running from?" Desmond responds, "I have to get my honor back, and that's what I'm running to."
