Hope, Curiosity & Pandora's Box
Sayid says in "Tabula Rasa," that they should not tell the rest of the group what they heard transmitted, because "If we tell them what we know we take away their hope. And hope is a very dangerous thing to lose."
In "Whatever the Case May Be," Sawyer is dying to know what is inside Kate's case. "At this point all I care about is satisfying my own curiosity."
In "Exodus," when asked by Hurley what Locke thinks is inside the hatch, he replies, "Hope. I think hope is inside." His curiosity and obsession over the hatch leads to them finally finding a way to force it open.
In "Man of Science, Man of Faith," Christian tells Jack, "You might want to try handing out some hope every once in awhile. Even if there's a 99 percent possibility that they're utterly, hopelessly screwed, folks are much more inclined to hear that 1 percent chance that things are going to be okay." Jack tells him, "I tell her that everything's going to be okay -- that's false hope, dad." Christian: "Maybe. Maybe, but it's still hope."
In "The Hunting Party," Mr. Friendly tells Jack, "Since the dawn of our species, man's been blessed with curiosity. You know the other one about curiosity don't you, Jack?"
In "S.O.S.," when Bernard tries to make an S.O.S. sign, Rose says, "Well, the only thing you are doing is giving these people false hope."
