"Fixing" people
There is the implication that some mysterious quality of the island is able to "fix" many illnesses, including Rose's terminal disease, Locke's paralysis, and possibly Jin's infertility. There is also the suggestion that many of the characters are psychologically "broken." Jack in particular seems to have an obsession with "fixing" people and situations, and does not like being out of control of life and death situations.
In "Tabula Rasa," Sawyer believes helping mortally injured Marshal Mars is a lost cause, and asks Jack, "How many of those pills are you going to use to fix him up?" Jack responds, "As many as it takes." Sawyer decides to shoot the Marshal to put him out of his misery, but botches the job, and leaves Jack with him (possibly to finish the job).
In "Confidence Man," Sawyer tells Jack, "Now you get to be the hero again, because that's what you do -- fix everything up all nice."
In "Solitary," Sayid fixes Danielle's music box, which has great sentimental value. He tells her, "You see, some things can be fixed." implying that human emotional issues are harder to fix.
In "Do No Harm," Jack tells Boone, "Listen to me. Listen! You are not going to die. I'm going to fix this, okay? I am going to save you." However, later on he realizes that Boone is "beyond repair" and mortally injured. In one of Jack's flashbacks, Sarah announces to the crowd at her wedding rehearsal that Jack fixed her, and addressing him, says "Because you fixed me, I will dance at our wedding."
In "Man of Science, Man of Faith," Jack tells Desmond when they meet in his flashback, that he has a patient (Sarah) that he can't fix. Desmond says, "Just one thing -- what if you did fix her?"
Jack kisses Gabriela in a "The Hunting Party" flashback (after failure to fix her father's condition in the OR), and later he tells Sarah and feels very guilty, saying "I'm going to fix this. We're going to go back to the way things were. I'm going to fix this. I'm going to fix this." She responds that the relationship is already over, and she's leaving him, saying "You, you will always need something to fix."
In "S.O.S.," Rose tells Isaac "I'm going to tell [Bernard] you fixed me. I'm going to tell him you fixed me."
In "A Tale of Two Cities," Jack accuses his father of having an affair with Sarah, and gets thrown in jail for a fight. Sarah bails him out and tells him, "Now you have something to fix."
