Loneliness / Isolation
Many shots in the Pilot of Locke choosing to isolate himself and sitting alone on the beach. Similar shots of Rose doing the same in "Walkabout."
Jin is isolated in almost every episode because of his language barrier.
The original button-pushers of the Swan were isolated from the outside world (Kelvin was presumably alone after Radzinsky died, and Desmond after he didn't have Kelvin).
In "White Rabbit":
Jack gives a famous speech: "Everyman for himself is not going to work... Last week most of us were strangers, but we're all here now. And god knows how long we're going to be here. But if we can't live together, we're going to die alone." "Live together, die alone" is later quoted by Sayid in "House of the Rising Sun" and Kate in "Man of Science, Man of Faith."
From "Solitary":
Sayid leaves camp after he can no longer face himself or other castaways because of his torturing Sawyer. He meets Danielle, a woman who has been alone for 16 years. She questions him as to why he is alone, and he replies that he left the others by choice. Later on, he tells her: "You don't have to be alone, Danielle."
From "Raised by Another":
Sayid (after coming back from his solitary trek): "We're not alone."
From "Homecoming":
Claire feels people are avoiding her after her return from being kidnapped, "No one will talk to me."
From "Outlaws":
Sayid (to Charlie, after Charlie shoots Ethan, and he feels like he's been ostracized):
"You're not alone. Don't pretend to be."
From "Do No Harm":
Claire repeatedly says she wants to be left alone (because she is in denial about the fact that she can't stop the contractions), and Kate tells her "You're not alone in this."
From "Adrift":
When the raft is destroyed, Michael says he wants to be left alone, and gets in a fight with Sawyer. Sawyer decides to paddle out on his own piece of raft, and is nearly killed by a shark that Michael shoots. They then work together to get onto the same piece of pontoon.
From "Orientation":
Helen to Locke: "You don't have to be alone."
Desmond has been in the hatch alone and totally isolated from the world since Kelvin died.
From "...And Found":
Sawyer to Jin: "In case you haven't noticed it's every man for himself, Chewie."
From "Abandoned":
Shannon isolates herself after Boone's death. Sayid tells her "you'd rather be out here alone and get lost or hurt." She believes that she sees Walt "all alone" and is frightened for him.
The tail section group are moving across the island, and considering leaving Sawyer behind because his infection is getting bad, and he will slow them down. Michael, Jin and Mr. Eko don't agree with this, and build him a stretcher.
From "What Kate Did":
The part of the orientation film splice that is found on Mr. Eko's side of the island says, "The isolation that attends the duties associated with Station 3 may tempt you to try and utilize the computer for communication with the outside world. This is strictly forbidden."
From "Collision":
Ana-Lucia: "I guess you could say I'm one of those people that's just better off alone." and later...
Libby: "Ana, what are you doing? You can't live out here alone."
Ana-Lucia: "I'm already alone."
From "The Hunting Party":
Michael decides to strike out on his own to find Walt despite many that try to stop him. He says "I have to do this alone."
From "Fire + Water":
The song lyrics Charlie writes are about two brothers:
"All alone, I try to be invincible / Together now we can be saved."
From "Dave":
Sawyer to Charlie: ""...you said it was every man for himself... outta my way." Later on, Hurley feels like he is going crazy and packs up to leave the camp for the caves. When asked by Libby, he says, he's going "Back to the caves. No one lives there anymore, so I won't bother anybody. I'm just going to live alone and be one of those guys -- you know, the crazy guys... Just leave me alone. You can't help me. No one can."
From "Live Together, Die Alone" (in itself a loaded title):
Penelope writes Desmond, "Please don't give up, Des. Because all we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us. And you have her. I will wait for you. Always. I love you, Pen."
From "Every Man for Himself" (in itself a loaded title):
Sawyer repeatedly says his mantra to Kate, "Every man for himself." This self-preserving attitude seems to be failing him, as he is forced by Ben's pacemaker con to stop confiding in Kate, making him miserable. Ben later remarks on this when he shows him that he is imprisoned a separate island from the main island (in itself metaphorical for isolation), when he says that the real con only worked once he convinced him they would hurt Kate if he didn't do as he was told. He observes to Sawyer that he tries so hard to show her he doesn't care. He then quotes Of Mice and Men: "A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. It don't make any difference who the guy is, so long as he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya, a guy gets too lonely, and he gets sick."
