"Good" People, The

Throughout the show, there is a repeated mention of the Others' concern with "good" people, though it is unknown what defines "good", if this is a moral term, or whether it should be understood in another context.  It is generally presumed that the Others consider themselves to among the "good family."  It is also presumed that the children are all considered "good."

The concept of "good people" is also a theme mentioned frequently by characters that are not Others, but usually is used in a context to denote morality, and it is unknown if this is a metaphor or unrelated to what the Others want to denote when they use the term.  Many of the mentions of "good" people are listed below, however, because they are made by different people, it may well be that not all instances denote the same kind of "good."

From "Walkabout":
Rose tells Jack "You have a nice way about you. A good soul, patient, caring. I suppose that's why you became a doctor."

From "Raised by Another":
Richard Malkin tells Claire of the prospective adoptive parents in LA, "They're good people."

From "Homecoming":
Hurley says in his eulogy of Scott Jackson, "He was a good guy."

From "Outlaws":
Christian confides in Sawyer about Jack, "He's a good man, maybe a great one."

From "...And Found":
The poor man tells Jin after he lets his son use the bathroom, "Thank you -- you're a good man."

From "The Other 48 Days":
Goodwin explains to Ana-Lucia that Nathan was killed because he "was not a good person" and that's why he wasn't on the list.

From "What Kate Did":
Kate tells Jack angrily, "I'm sorry that I am not as perfect as you. I'm sorry that I'm not as good."

From "The 23rd Psalm":
Charlie tells Eko, "You don't know me, man. I was a good person. I was an alter boy."

From "Fire + Water":
Sawyer tells Charlie, after he's asked how he came up with the elaborate scheme to get back the guns, "I'm not a good man."

From "One of Them":
Sayid says "I was 23 years old when the Americans came to my country. I was a good man. I was a soldier. And when they left I was something different."

From "Maternity Leave":
Ethan tells Claire "We are good people, Claire. Good family."  Later, after Claire escapes, she recalls Alex to Danielle, and says, "She was not like the others, she was good."

From "The Whole Truth":
Ben says, "This must be my reward for good behavior, huh? I guess I earned myself some good will for finally drawing that map for Ana."

From "Dave":
Ben yells out as Sayid prepares to shoot him, "You can't do this! I am not a bad person!"

From "S.O.S.":
Jack says to Kate of the earlier incident where Tom kidnapped Kate and made the rest of them disarm, "They could have kept you but they didn't. Then again, they didn't really want me, either. Kate responds, "Damaged goods, both of us."

From "Two for the Road":
Ben struggles with Ana-Lucia as he tries to stangle her, and says, "You killed 2 of us -- good people who were leaving you alone. You're the killer, Ana-Lucia."  Locke later asks him why he hurt Ana-Lucia and not him when he was trapped under the door, and Ben tells him, "Because you're one of the good ones, John."  When Locke presses him as to what he means by this, Ben evades the question, saying "None of this matters.  I'm dead anyway... Because the man in charge -- he's a great man, John, a brilliant man -- but he's not a forgiving man. He'll kill me because I failed, John."

From "?":
Charlotte Malkin tells Eko that she saw Yemi in the "in-between place" and that "He said that even though you were pretending, you're a good man... He said that even though you don't have faith in yourself, that he has faith in you."

From "Live Together, Die Alone":
Ben says "We're the good guys, Michael."

Some of the earlier lists the Others make appear to list the "good" people.  We do not see the first list that was carried by the Other woman Ana-Lucia killed, or the second unfinished list Ethan was supposed to make before bringing in Claire, but the final list Miss Klugh gave Michael listed:

Jack Shephard
Kate Austen
Hugo Reyes
James Ford

However, there has been no mention so far if the above list is of "the good."
