Karen and Gerald Degroot were two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan who founded the DHARMA Initiative in 1970 (what little is known about them is from the Orientation films. Their goal was to create a large communal research facility allowing scientists to study the social science implications of meterology, psychology, para-psychology, zoology, electro-magnetism and utopian sociology. Their goal was realized through the financial backing of Alvar Hanso.
