According to Danielle, Brennan was part of her science team that was on an expedition in 1988 when they visited the island to examine the source of the Numbers transmission.
Danielle's distress signal said, "He [or it] is outside, he's [or it's] outside, and Brennan took the keys". Shortly after visiting the Black Rock, he and the others in her research team succumbed to the "sickness," and she was forced to kill them.
Note: The spelling of his name (as opposed to "Brandon") was confirmed by Gregg Nations at The Fuselage.
