Goodwin appears on the beach immediately after the tail section of Flight 815 crashes in the waters nearby. He appears to be a survivor from the tail section, and calls for help when he apparently discovers Bernard stranded in the top of a large tree; he and Ana-Lucia help get him down.
Later, Goodwin builds a signal fire, and after the first attack, tries to persuade the group to stay on the beach. Ana grows suspicious that one of the Others has infiltrated their group. At first, she suspects Nathan and throws him in a pit. After a few days, she tells Goodwin that she is going to start breaking his fingers. That night, Goodwin helps Nathan out of the pit, and then breaks his neck.
When the tailies find the Arrow Station, and uncover a working radio, Goodwin and Ana hike to higher ground to try and make contact with someone. Once they are isolated, Ana confronts Goodwin. She asks Goodwin why his clothes weren't wet when he first appeared on the island. If he came from the plane, which crashed in the water, his clothes should have been wet. Once he realizes his cover is blown, Goodwin admits that he wasn't on the plane. He tells Ana he had to kill Nathan, because he knew when she started breaking his fingers, and Nathan continued to say he was on the plane, she would realize she had the wrong person and start to focus on others in the tail section group. He also tells Ana that Nathan wasn't taken by the Others because he wasn't good, and that the kids that were taken are better off now. Ana and Goodwin then engage in mortal combat - with Ana coming out the victor.
Later, the Prisoner (fake "Henry), when he is held captive in the armory, tells Ana of Goodwin: "He kept saying you were misunderstood... how he thought you were worthy, and that he could change you. But he was wrong. And it cost him his life."
It appears Goodwin is to the tail group what Ethan was to the middle section group, but it is still unclear what affiliation Ethan and Goodwin have to one another or where they fall in the heirarchy of the Others.
