While Jack is attempting to put together a kite on a beach in Phuket, Thailand, he is approached by Achara.  She helps him assemble a kite, as he seems to be very inept at the process and they launch it together.  Afterwards, they share a meal at a local restaurant where her brother, Chet, praises Jack’s decision to try local cuisine.  While at dinner, Achara is greeted by an unknown man who gives her a small, rectangular object.  She does not immediately explain this to Jack, but after he specifically asks about it, she explains that she has a “gift.”  Sometime after becoming Jack’s lover, he begins to question exactly what that gift is.

Achara does not tell Jack much about herself, even though they have had sex many times.  Unable to except the lack of answers, and intoxicated Jack follows Achara to her workplace.  He is amused when he enters what appears to be a tattoo parlor.  She asks him to leave, but he not only refuses he forces her to tell him about her “gift.”  Achara tells Jack that she has the power to "see who people are", and then tattoos that information onto them. She explains to him that he is not allowed to be there because he is an outsider.  Jack again forces Achara to tell him what she sees in him even though she tells him there will be consequences.  Achara tells Jack she sees that he is a leader, but that being one makes him lonely and angry. She tattoo’s him with Chinese characters that according to Isabel literally translate to "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us." 

The consequences occur when Chet discovers what Jack did, he and a group of Thai men beat Jack severely, and force him to leave the country and never see Achara again.
