Others, The

This is a term that was first used by Danielle Rousseau, when she first meets Sayid and believes he is one of Them. She says that They were the carriers of the Sickness which wiped out her research team, and when Sayid asks her who they are, Danielle calls them the Others. Danielle says she hears them in the jungle, whispering, but Sayid believes she may be crazy because of her longtime isolation.
Later on, it becomes apparent that they are not on the island alone as both the middle section and the tail section groups are attacked by; at times they kill, and at times they kidnap specific people (presumably the ones they consider "good" on the lists they are making). The 815 survivors begin to use the arbitrary term "Others" to describe this group of men and women who appear to dress in ragged clothes and don't leave tracks, though it is not known exactly what their motivations are, where they came from, or if they are even one group at this point.
They appear strong, fairly well-organized, and willing to fight viciously when necessary. They appear to have access to firearms, primitive weapons like darts and bolos, and crude explosives.
Goodwin is sent as a spy into the tail section group, and Ethan is sent as a spy into the middle section group. They appear especially interested in capturing children and certain people who they call "good" (though it is not known what this is meant), who they write into lists. They appear to know more about the 815 survivors than vice versa. After Walt is captured, they appear interested in running tests on him.
Tom, the bearded Other, says that Jack is not to cross an invisible line in the jungle, because: "You know, somebody a whole lot smarter than anybody here once said: 'Since the dawn of our species man's been blessed with curiosity.' You know the other one about curiosity don't you, Jack? This is not your island. This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it." The line about curiosity is quoted from Alvar Hanso.
Later, with Claire's recovered memories about the Staff station, it becomes apparent that the Others are not what they seem. In Claire's flashbacks, the Others appear clean-shaven and neatly dressed as scientists in lab coats. Ethan has a DHARMA keychain. Ethan tells Claire that they are a "good family." They administer medication to Aaron through Claire's abdomen, and are intent on taking him by c-section, but she is able to escape. In an abandoned locker, Kate later finds a fake beard and ragged clothes, a disguise that was worn by Tom on several occasions.
When a man is captured in one of Danielle's traps, she shoots him with a crossbow and turns him over to Sayid. This turns out to be Ben. He disguises himself "Henry Gale" and lies that he was stranded there by hot air balloon and had nothing to do with the Others, but after the driver's license of the real deceased Henry is found, his lies are exposed. Ben is later freed by Michael, who betrays his friends in exchange for being freed with Walt. This man turns out to be rather high on the heirarchy of the Others, and tells Michael that he will honor his word. When asked who the Others are, he says "We're the good guys."
The Others pretend to live in a camp to the North of the Swan, mostly in primitive huts. This camp is by the beach, and features a large stone structure with a hole in it, as well as a usually-guarded hatch with a rectangular-DHARMA symbol on it.
However, much of this is all for show when the lostaways are around. Prior to the crash of Flight 815, they lived comfortably in a hidden part of the island in a technologically advanced Others' Community. This place was complete with modern houses and amenities.
They refer to their leader as "Him," but it is unknown who this is at that time.
Specific Others include:
Ben
Juliet
Miss Bea Klugh
Tom ("Mr. Friendly")
Goodwin
Ethan Rom
Pickett
Colleen
Adam
Ryan
Aldo
Alex (who appears to be partly with the Others, but at times rebellious, and helps Claire escape)
Karl (imprisoned for something; confirmed by podcast to be an Other, not a former survivor)
It is unknown just how many there are, though Michael says that there are 22, and there are usually around 10-20 in many scenes.
815 Survivors taken by the Others include:
Zack
Emma
Claire
Walt (released)
Cindy
Michael (released)
Hurley (released)
Kate
Sawyer
Jack
Several other redshirts are taken. It also unknown if some of these characters were killed, kidnapped, or if any of the survivors either joined up later with the Others, or were willing participants in a prior setup.
