Sabrina Carlyle is Boone's mother, and Shannon's step-mother. Sabrina Carlyle married Shannon's father, Adam Rutherford, when Shannon was 8 and Boone was 10. It appears that Sabrina and Shannon have never really gotten along.

Sabrina and Shannon were called to St. Sebastian's when Adam Rutherford was brought into the ER from a car accident. Adam was struck by Jack's future wife, Sarah, and was fatally wounded. He had stopped breathing at the scene of the accident, and had no chest sounds when the EMTs brought him into the ER. Adam Rutherford died in the ER while Jack worked on Sarah.

When Sabrina and Shannon were informed of Adam's death at the hospital, Sabrina asked to see the body. The doctor responded "Of course. Would your daughter like to come?", to which Sabrina scowled and answered back "Step-daughter. Come on, Shannon". At the wake, Shannon told Boone that she felt Sabrina hated her, and that "from day one she resented my relationship with him, my dad."

Shannon was cut off financially after her father died, with all of his money going to Sabrina. When Shannon asked about her father's will, Sabrina told Shannon that there wasn't a will, only a living trust, and that everything he owned passed to her (Sabrina). Sabrina encouraged Shannon to find a job, and refused to give her money because she knew Shannon wouldn't pay her back. She told Shannon "You're on your own."

Shannon asked Boone to try and get some money from Sabrina for her, but he wasn't able to do so. Instead, Sabrina offered Boone a job in her wedding business. Boone accepted, and planned to move back to Malibu from New York. This left Shannon without any means to get to New York to accept the intern job she'd been offered with the Martha Graham dance company, or a place to stay once she got there.
