Tom Brendon was a childhood friend of Kate's from Iowa. Kate approached Tom after trying to visit her dying mother, Diane Jansen, where she found her room guarded by security personnel.
He was married to a woman named Rachel, and they had a 22 month old son named Connor. When Kate showed up, Rachel and Connor were away in Cedar Rapids. Tom knew about Kate's fugitive status, and being a doctor at the same hospital, arranged an MRI scan for Kate's mother to allow Kate to visit her, circumventing the security guards.
While they waited for the MRI scan appointment, Kate and Tom traveled to a rural area to dig up a time capsule they buried in 1989. The time capsule, which was a New Kids on the Block lunchbox, contained a baseball cap, Tom's toy plane, an autographed baseball, and a cassette tape, amongst other items. The cassette tape was made by Kate and Tom when they first placed items into the time capsule on August 15, 1989. The tape revealed that Tom envisioned he and Kate would eventually marry and have nine kids, while Kate looked forward to getting her license so she could run away.
When Kate visited her mother, things didn't go as planned. Kate's mother began to panick and scream for help when she realized Kate, was in the room. She had never forgiven her for killing Wayne, Kate's father. Kate was forced to flee as security guards and police gave chase. During her escape, Tom was fatally injured when Kate ran through a blockade.
The US Marshal tracking Kate, Ed Mars, found Tom's toy plane in the wrecked escape vehicle belonging to Tom and placed it in a safety deposit box in New Mexico. Kate later held up the bank in order to recover the toy plane, which had great sentimental value to her, because she never forgot her feelings for Tom.
