Shannon was born in 1983. When she was 8, her father (Adam Rutherford) married Boone's mother Sabrina. When she was 18, Jack's future wife Sarah was involved in an accident with Shannon's father that resulted in his death.
This death changed her life because her father never had a will, and Sabrina cut Shannon off from his estate shortly afterwards, leaving her on her own financially. She worked as a ballet instructor with roommate and friend Nora, but when the opportunity came up for an internship in NYC, Shannon had to turn it down due to lack of funds.
Shannon and Boone had an odd relationship over the years that sometimes went beyond the bounds of brother and sister. She often went from depending on one man to another, and Boone would bribe them not to bother her if it soured. At some point, Shannon lived in St. Tropez, France with a boyfriend and his child. Eventually, she ended up living in Sydney, where she conned Boone into coming to 'rescue' her from an abusive relationship with Bryan, a local man. She admitted then that she had been using Boone for years, but in a moment of weakness, Boone still slept with her, because he had always loved her. The next day, however, she wanted only to fly back to CA with him, as though nothing happened.
Shannon can be very cruel and manipulative to get what she wants. At the airport, she was responsible for having Sayid pulled out of line and questioned.
On the island, she uses Charlie to get food for herself. Yet, she is also dependent on Boone to save her from herself. She has asthma, and has often dependent on Boone to take care of her over the years in coping with her condition. During one particularly bad attack where Jack can do little for her, Sun uses Eucalyptus from her garden to help her breathe.
Shannon does learn to be more independant on the island, and after helping Sayid translate the lyrics of La Mer on Danielle's maps, the two start a relationship, despite Boone's jealousy.
After Boone dies in the Beechcraft accident, Shannon blames Locke for what happened, and tries to exact revenge upon him. She fires a gun at Locke, but misses the target as Sayid tackles her simultaneously. This strains their relationship. She does, however, gain a new friend, Vincent. Walt gives Vincent to Shannon before he leaves on the raft, telling her that Vincent was a comfort to him when his mother died, and that perhaps he'd be the same for Shannon.
After one night with Sayid, Shannon has a vision of Walt (who was then already gone), and becomes upset when Sayid doesn't believe her. She treks into the jungle to find Walt with Vincent. Sayid goes after Shannon, and together they see a vision of Walt, who appears to want to communicate with them. Shannon gets up abruptly to go after Walt, and she is accidentally shot by a frightened Ana-Lucia (who is just then making it across the island with her own tail section group). Shannon dies in Sayid's arms from the fatal wound.
