As a young child, Hurley worked with is father, David Reyes, on an old Camaro which they were to drive to the Grand Caynon when it was finished. However, David took off for Las Vegas one day and Hurley did not have any contact with him for 17 years. This seems to have contributated to Hurley's eating disorder. Even so, Hurley has developed a good sense of humor and is well-liked by others.
One time, he stepped on a deck, causing it to collapse and kill several people. He became profoundly depressed over his guilt, and his mother, Carmen, commited him to Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute.
Here, he befriended a character who he believed is a bald man named Dave, who seemed to want him to do uncharacteristically risky or irresponsible things like steal food and not take his medication. Hurley's psychiatrist, Dr. Brooks, showed Hurley a Polaroid photo which he believed was taken with his arm around Dave, but which actually showed nothing there. This was in an effort to convince him that Dave was in fact an imaginary friend or psychotic hallucination. When Dave appeared to Hurley again one night, he refused his suggestion that they escape the institution, and has a "breakthrough" after that.
While in the institution, Hurley met Lenny, a man who is obsessed with the Numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42. Libby also shared a past with Hurley, since she was admited as a patient there at the same time he was, but Hurley was not aware of this fact.
Shortly after his release, Hurley used the Numbers and won 114 million dollars in the the Mega Lotto. Up until then, Hurley had liked his simple life, working at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack with best friend Johnny. After being fed up with his irritating boss Randy, he quit, and went joyriding with Johnny. He got the courage to ask out Starla, a girl who worked at a record store. He had second thoughts about telling anyone he had won the lottery at all, but the gas station clerk at the convenience store where he bought the ticket recognized him and pushed him into the spotlight.
From that point on, Hurley seemed to be under a blessing and a curse that he believed is due to him using the Numbers. Hurley appeared to have incredibly good financial luck, according to his financial advisor Ken Halperin, however, those around him suffered injury and death. He got falsely arrested, his mother broke her ankle, his grandfather Tito died, and his brother Diego was left by his wife, Lisa. Hurley uses some of the lottery money to buy Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack and hires his old boss, Randy Nations, to run it. The day before they are to open, Tricia Tanaka is interviewing Hurley and Randy for a "puff piece" on Action 8 news. Despite Hurley's objections, Tricia and her cameraman go into the restaurant to get more footage. Seconds later, the restaurant is completely destroyed by a meteor.
Later, he visits SRMHI again, where Dr. Curtis helped him track down Lenny. Lenny informs Hurley that he and Sam Toomey heard the Numbers first broadcast while sailing in the Pacific for the Navy, and that Hurley needed to get away from the Numbers. As Hurley is convinced that the numbers are cursed, his mother decides to enlist the aide of his father to convince him otherwise. David Reyes reappears and much to Hurley's disgust becomes intimate again with Carmen. David takes Hurely to see a psychic to remove the curse on him and the numbers. During his reading, Hurley realizes that his father is behind the psychic's knowledge and pays her to tell the truth. Afterward, Hurley is even more determined to find out what is going on and Hurley decided to track down the source of the Numbers. As Hurley tells his father he is going to Australia, David tells Hurley that he will be there when Hurley returns.
Hurley traveled to Kalgoorlie, Australia, where he found Sam Toomey's wife, Martha. Martha told Hurley that Sam and Lenny used to serve together in a Navy listening mission in the Pacific. Sam heard the numbers one day, and used them to win a bean guessing game down to the exact number, that had been going on for forty years. Like Hurley, Sam fell into what he believed to be a curse - where he was blessed with good luck, while those around him had incredibly bad luck. Eventually, Sam killed himself to break the perceived curse.
Hurley was traveling back to the states in time for his mother's birthday, and almost missed Flight 815. He was just "lucky" enough to be the last person let on the plane. He took a comic book on board as reading material.
On the island, Hurley appears to be generally a fun-loving guy, doing things like making a golf course for stress release. However, when he sees the numbers scribbled on Danielle's maps, he decides to hunt down Danielle and find out what the numbers are. Danielle informs Hurley that the numbers were being broadcast from the tower by the Black Rock before she changed the transmission. She also agrees with Hurley that the numbers seem to be cursed. Hurley is relieved that someone confirms this because he is the superstitious type (he even believes there is a bird that calls his name).
When Locke and Jack decide to blow the hatch open with dynamite, Hurley tries to stop them at the last moment when he sees the numbers imprinted on the side of the hatch. Locke ignores Hurley and lights the fuse, opening the hatch.
Hurley starts falling for Libby, and confides in her that he has been hiding the DHARMA food for himself. She convinces him to stop doing this, but at that moment, the food drop is discovered, and Hurley now believes again that he is cursed.
He then begins seeing images of Dave again on the island. Dave tries to convince Hurley that he is real, but that the island and everyone on it is his imagination, and jumps over a cliff. Hurley is almost convinced to follow him (believing it is the only way to wake up), but is stopped by Libby, who kisses him.
Hurley woos Libby after that, and wants to take her on a picnic. When she is shot getting blankets (unbeknownst to anyone at the time, by Michael), Hurley is devastated. After her funeral, he tells Michael that he will go with Kate, Sawyer, Jack and Michael to get their revenge, and retrieve Walt. However, the group is betrayed by Michael, and they are ambushed and captured by the Others. Though Hurley is one of the 4 on the list, he is the only one freed by the Others. Miss Klugh tells him that his job is to tell the 815 survivor group that they are never to return.
Hurley met up with Locke and Charlie on his way back to the beach camp after being released by the Others. Hurley told them what had happened and that Ben was actually their leader. They warned him about the polar bear and continued on looking for Eko. On his way, Hurley came across a naked Desmond running through the jungle. After Desmond tells Hurley about a speech that Locke had not yet even given, Hurley has a Déjà vu moment and stares at Desmond as Locke actually does make the speech.
Later, as Hurley and Charlie were going through Sawyer’s stash, Desmond approached them and asked them to come with him. They meet up with Locke and Sayid in the jungle and as Locke is explaining what happened to Eko, Hurley noticed that Desmond was acting strange. When Desmond takes off running toward the beach, the rest follow him. After Desmond rescues Claire, both Charlie and Hurley question how Desmond what aware that she needed help. This leads Hurley to say that he believes that Desmond can see the future. Hurley and Charlie decide to get Desmond drunk to find out his secret. Charlie tries to force Desmond to tell him how he knew Claire was in danger and a fight ensues. Hurley breaks it up. He and Charlie help Desmond back to his tent.
The next day, Hurley visited Libby’s grave and talked to her about what has been going on and about how much he misses her. Later, he sees Vincent carrying a disarticulated skeletal arm with a key in its grip. Hurley follows Vincent into the jungle and discovers an old VW van with a Dharma Logo on it. He tries to enlist help to fix the van, but only Jin inadvertently volunteers.
Hurley and Jin find some documents and a large amount of Dharma beer in the van, along with a corpse whose head comes off as they attempt to lift it out. Sawyer appears at the van and angrily accuses Hurley of taking his things, but he is immediately assuaged by Hurley’s hug. The three of them work together to flip the van over and try to find a way to start it.
Hurley then gets Charlie to help. Together they roll the van down a hill with Hurley in the driver’s seat and Charlie riding shotgun. Just before the van hits some large black rocks, Hurley pops the clutch and the van roars to life verifying to Hurley his father’s words that he makes his own luck. The group then rides around the hillside in the van listening to music and drinking the Dharma beer. Later, Hurley is left alone in the van to reconcile himself with the knowledge that he might indeed be in control of his own fate.
The following day, they find the ping-pong table from the Swan Station that was apparently blown out by the EMP. When they can’t find a ball, Sawyer – who has the ball-, tells them that he will play for the contents of his stash. Hurley is picked as their best player and Sawyer is defeated. His punishment is that he is unable to use nicknames for a week. Hurley gives an obviously forlorn Sawyer back is his porn stash, and tells him not to worry about Kate.
Hurley and Sawyer are playing ping-pong when Nikki exits the jungles and falls in front of them. She uttered, "paralyzed" which Hurley misinterprets as "Paulo lies" before she apparently dies. Hurley, Sawyer and Jin find Paulo in the jungle also apparently dead. Hurley talks to Desmond and learns that Nikki and Sawyer argued about a gun earlier that day. Later, he says the eulogy over Nikki and Paulo and as he and Sawyer bury them, neither notice that Nikki has opened her eyes.
After the deaths of Nikki and Paulo, Hurley confronts Sawyer about his attitude and says that there is a pending vote to banish him from the camp. After Sawyer tries to prove that he can live on his own, and fails, Sawyer comes back to Hurley and asks what he can do to change the vote. Hurley tells Sawyer that he should try and make amends for his past actions towards the rest of the survivors. Reluctantly, Sawyer decides to do just that. However, it turns out later that although Sawyer enjoys his new leader image, the vote for banishment was only a con.
When Juliet arrives at the beach camp with Jack, Kate and Sayid, Hurley is assigned the task of keeping an eye on her until they can decide what to do with her. Hurley asks Juliet where she was the day that he was captured with Jack, Kate and Sawyer and by pointing to Ethan’s grave, tells her in no uncertain terms what happens to Other’s who enter the beach camp with malicious intent.
Hurley accompanies Desmond, Jin and Charlie into the jungle after Desmond has a vision and asks Hurley about the cable in the sand. While camping on the beach, eating marshmallows and telling ghost stories, the group hears what sounds like a helicopter. They hear it founder and see a large splash in the ocean. They see a red blinking light and when daylight comes, they go to find it in the jungle. As they walk, Hurley and Charlie argue about who is faster, Superman or the Flash. During this argument, Charlie is nearly killed by an arrow set off by a trip wire. Hurley and the others help Desmond cut down the parachutist and lower her to the ground.
