Charlie is a young British man with a musical background. He has a tattoo on one of his arms that contains lines from Strawberry Fields Forever, a song by John Lennon. This is actually a tattoo the actor (Dom Monahgan) has in the real world. The tattoo reads "Living is easy, with eyes closed".
Charlie grew up from meager beginnings in a Catholic UK household. His mother (Megan Pace) encouraged his musical talents by buying him a piano. His father, a butcher, mocked his music as a waste of time.
Charlie formed band, along with his brother Liam called Driveshaft. As they rose to fame, Charlie started following his brother's footsteps into the world of sex, drugs and rock n' roll - becoming hooked on heroin like him.
After Liam became a father, he battled his own addiction with heroin and cleaned up his act. He sold Charlie's piano to go a rehab center in Australia, bringing about an end to Driveshaft.
Charlie was still an addict because of bad influences from friends like Tommy and groupies like Lily, drifted aimlessly. He ended up meeting a girl named Lucy, who had a rich and influential father, Francis Heatherton. He was the owner of a paper company, and got Charlie a job selling photocopiers. Charlie blew this opportunity when he showed up coming off a high at a job presentation. Lucy also found out that he tried to steal one of her father's antiques, and threw him out.
At some point, Charlie decided to revive Driveshaft and begin a new tour starting in Los Angeles. He traveled to Sydney first to try to get his brother to rejoin the group, but Liam said his priorities had changed. He was comfortable living in Australia with his wife Karen and new baby already, and the band was only a reminder of his past life of addiction.
While on the island, Charlie and Claire develop a close friendship, and Charlie becomes enamored with Claire. While still pregnant, Claire is abducted by Ethan. Ethan hangs Charlie, who is later rescued by Jack and Kate. Claire eventually escapes and returns to camp. When Ethan shows up later threatening that they must return her, a trap is set, and Charlie shoots and kills Ethan. He becomes very withdrawn after that, though Rose helps him through some of it with prayer.
With the help of Locke and Jack, Charlie is able to kick his addiction temporarily. However, when he is searching for Aaron with Sayid, he stumbles upon a plane full of Virgin Mary statues that contain heroin - awakening the temptation inside him. He hides many of these statues.
Charlie is very protective of Claire and her newborn son, Aaron. He has religious visions/dreams of the two, and becomes at one point convinced that Aaron is in danger, eventually convincing Claire to have him baptized. He begins to become jealous of her growing closeness with Locke, especially after Claire finds out that the Virgin Mary statues Charlie is carrying around are filled with heroin and rejects him. Sawyer concocts an elaborate plan to have Charlie attack Sun in her garden (pretending to be an Other). Charlie goes along with it, because it will allow Sawyer to steal Locke's guns and make him look like a fool.
Charlie starts to befriend Mr. Eko, who is also Catholic. They begin to build a church together, but Eko abandons the project after find the Pearl.
Charlie throws the remainder of the Virgin Mary statues back in the ocean in a final effort to reject temptation.
Charlie finds medication and an injector in the food drop. After trying it on himself, he believes that it is the "vaccine" that Claire believes Aaron needs against sickness, and ends up giving it to her. Shortly thereafter, she kisses him.
Charlie helps Eko in his efforts to stop Locke from letting the countdown run down past zero. He retrieves dynamite and Eko tries to blow the door open unsuccessfully. During the final moments of the EMP, Charlie and Eko are caught in the Swan.
