Eddie was the hitchhiker that Locke met when he was living in California on Mike and Jan's commune, on his way to Eureka. Locke brought him into the naturalistic community for work, and he was welcomed as one of the 'family'. However, Eddie got a little too nosy about the greenhouse, where it turned out marijuana was being illegally grown, and Mike and Jan discovered that he was an undercover cop. Locke told them that he would 'take care of it'. He led Eddie out to the forest under the guise of hunting, but with the intent to shoot him. However, Eddie talks Locke out of it, saying that he was not the type to be a killer, and walks off without being shot.
