We only know of Janelle through her diary, the diary featured on ABC's LOST website.
On the island, she keeps a diary of events that transpire and also reveals bits and pieces about her past. From the diary, we know that Janelle was the first person to discover Scott's body. We also learn she is an experienced diver, who went diving along the Great Barrier Reef with Joanna. She mentions her dive bag several times, and hints that it contains some sort of weapon she is willing to use to defend herself. Janelle is also very athletic, and runs on the island to keep in shape - and to prepare for a conflict she anticipates is coming. The diary indicates Janelle was raped or kidnapped in Louisiana, and that she possibly killed her attacker in a staged accident. Through the diary, we also know Janelle is aware of the hatch, the whispers, and other happenings on the island. She tears out a page of her diary, with her name on it, to put in the bottle going on the raft.
In her last entry, it appears she and a group of other survivors are attacked. Someone else finds the diary, and begins writing in it. This person says that their brother is being held prisoner in the hatch, and that the captives have no right to do what they are doing. It is unclear if he or she is refering to the real Henry Gale or to the Prisoner ("fake Henry") who lied about his name.
