Episode 3x11 / Re: How did Locke know that 3:05 was a compass bearing?
« on: March 08, 2007, 03:19:01 PM »
This confused me. Everyone thought what Locke was focusing on was "Lift up your eyes and look North", when in reality, he was ALSO considering 3:05, not as the Bible scripture, but as a compass direction.  Clever, but just really "out there".

And was there any tie in to "compass bearing 325"?

Locke is definitely a wild card lately.  I saw a few theories that he blew up the Flame on purpose, knowing what 77 would do... and I'm starting to believe them.
the "Jesus stick" says, "Lift up your eyes and look north  John 3:05.

what confuses me is this is John 3:05:  Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."  OR there is 1 John 3:05:  But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.

I don't see how these pertain to lost, or our story.

Funny thing about Lost and the Bible is that you can twist almost anything in that book to make it sound significant I think. :)  Because a lot of scripture just looks like it SHOULD have another layer.

As opposed to taking a line from another book, where the line on that page might end up being "And so he went to the bathroom, and came back in 5 minutes."

:D

I came THIS close to giving it a 10. To be honest, I don't even know why I didn't, I guess I am just averse to perfect scores.  But that episode rocked.

I totally agree, Rick.

While episodes like "Tricia Tanaka" are ok sometimes for light-hearted character development, it bored the stuffing out of me.

Then "Enter 77" comes along and blows my socks off.  We suddenly think "now we're getting answers, woohoo!" and then they discredit the storyteller and blow up the Flame, making us start from near scratch again.  Even so, I really enjoy that, because it does answer SOME questions.  I love this show!

From this screencap of Mikhail's document, a lot of translations came out.

I had a few thoughts when I saw it--first off, Nadji... is he the same Nadji as was a waiter in Sayid's flashback?  Also, does anyone remember what Sayid's own alias, which he used in Syria was?  I recall it being similar.

Also, I was wondering if someone with a little more background in Muslim history could discuss what the possible tie-ins of Muslim jihadists and Soviet Army might be to the story.  I think that the Afghani mujahideen did fight the Soviets at one point, correct?  Aren't they an ethnic minority that was suppressed?

And how might this relate to Sayid's past and tie him to Mikhail?

Sorry, more questions than answers this time, but I LOVED this episode. :)

SOL: Yeah, I know the online translator says that, but I've checked with a few native French speakers, and they have said there is awkward usage there... I added the note in small font to the Lostpedia page (under the "Un classique" section..)

People with the original puzzles, please double check the transcribed codes; we have found (and corrected) a few errors lately.  The back glow-in-the-dark is hard to read (and even harder to read from pictures).

Ok everyone, I created a table to record some of my attempts at cracking the code with various books.  If you want to attempt this yourself, I've also listed several online resources to try other books, and instructions on how to add to the table.

THanks piglet for posting all those...

*NEW BREAKING NEWS FROM LAST NIGHT!*

My friend p0pinfresh just emailed me, he completed the 4th puzzle, which just came out last week. On the back, there's a fascinating new clue!  Piglet, I know you speak French, could you help us out?

Un Vis Classique, Chapitre et Vers

Now, I know the basic meaning is "A classic, chapter and verse"... so yay! We have confirmation that it is a book cipher after all! But we are confused about the use of "vis" here... it was suggested that this was refering to "Turn of the Screw"... but we thought this was a strange use of "vis".  I also suggested maybe Alfred de Musset, book of poetry Locke drew his map on.  Any other thoughts?  I'm going to go look and see if there are online versions of these books, maybe this is like Sledge's Mutual Friend Hunt.

I put 7, because I thought the episode was somewhat slow-ish and was a little frustrated by the "big reveals" they seemed to promise, and didn't deliver.  I liked the other 2 episodes that preceded them.

I was curous... for everyone else who votes, do you put the score relative to all Lost episodes?  Because if it's more just generally as far as quality of TV, I'd put all Lost episodes above a 7.

I'm really kind of surprised Bob went after the last episode.  IMO Portland and Flashes were both pretty cool... but now Stranger... that's another story! (I didn't think it was awful, just nothing special)

Episode 3x09 / Re: Other Others debunked?
« on: February 22, 2007, 06:47:43 PM »
My understanding on the "other Others" that was suggested was just that the other "faction" always just refered to the rebellious Others, of which we know include Juliet, Alex and Karl at least.  So if we know about them, there are probably others in hiding, too.

LOL... any headway with the symbol yet, aside from the skater thing?

I saw a few neat references to Wiccan symbols and other stuff... even saw one saying it was like the map to the Death Star, lol.

That fits more than the martians.

Actually, the Martians aren't really a big part of the book at. It's more about this naive, peaceful guy with all this mystical power, and everyone around him wants to exploit him. I think he sacrifices himself to save the world at the end.

You're off the mark a little there...
I read the book once but don't remember a lot of it.
Basically there's a guy, who, as has been previously mentioned, was raised by Martians. As a result he has all kinds of special powers, but that's not entirely important. Anyways, he's like being held in a hospital by the government, and he befriends a nurse there, and they escape...I've mostly forgotten the middle of the novel.
Anyways, he starts up this big religion/cult thing where he teaches members to do cool things with their minds (like telekinesis...I think), and as I recall two of the larger tenets of the religion/cult are sexual liberation, and the presence of God in everything. The novel ends with him being stoned to death by an angry mob while he kind of just stands there.
(Any of that is liable to be completely wrong)

A word that was invented by the book is "Grokk", which, put in really simple terms, means to understand something's very essence.

These references are all pretty cool.  Even though it's not about Desmond, but about Jack, now that the epi has aired (weird tat powers, saving others, etc)... it does seem to have some resonance...

I thought the rest of the episode was a tad lackluster, but I thought she was the highlight... she was a coolass mean chick. :)  Only thing better would be to have her kick Jack's ass... Thai gang style. (Don't get me wrong, I love Jack)
