Episode 6x15 / Re: Jack wins the election!
« on: May 19, 2010, 02:16:19 AM »
Funny how in the Sideways world they are both now Men of Faith - now that Locke believes he is supposed to be fixed.  It was kind of nice seeing the "real" John Locke back (you know, the Man of Faith).  I've missed him.

How is Alt Jack a man of faith? Didn't he say to Locke not to confuse coincidence with fate?

My guess was Linda Hunt too, but I didn't know her name. I was about to IMDB for the lady who did the voice of the talking tree in Disney's Pocahontas.

Unless Jacob was wrong all along.  The sideways looks pretty good for the everyone to me.

You're right. Jacob got his version of reality from Mother. Why should we believe her reality to be true?

An oldie but a goodie, "Don't mistake coincidence for fate."

I second this.  We've been hearing it for years and I can't get enough.

Han the horizontal wheel (as turned by Ben and Locke) be reconciles with the vertical wheel (as made by Jacob's brother)?  I don't see how they can be seen as the same wheel, but perhaps they are part of the same larger "machine" - gears if you will.

I guess I'm trying to figure out of the Smoke came directly from MIB's "Bad Parts" or if the smoke is like the opposite of the well of life.   If I die, and my spirit/life goes into this Light in the stream, what happens to MY bad parts?...

OK, maybe it's because you're name is DirtyMaggieMae, but I can not stop giggling when you say bad parts here. Hehehe.

Madam P- during the episode when Jacob washes his face in the water I just realized that maybe that was like a way of blessing it.  (Unintentionally?)  I'm trying to visualize the island and place what went where.

I also realized something in myself with this episode too.  After we find out what the light is I started asking "How did it get there?  How did Mother Pretender get there?  How does it work?  How does the water and the light make the ability to leave the island?"  And then I remembered words spoken early on in this episode, "Every question I answer will just lead to more questions."  And the only conclusion I can come up with is that I just have to accept it as is, and believe in that.  Satisfying?  No.  Mystifying? Yes!

It's probably right along with the answer you get from people when you ask them about where God came from to create everything, he was just always there.

Exactly, Bob.  But you're not supposed to ask.  That's the message we get from Mother. And apparently from the writers now.

Episode 6x14 / Re: MIB's real name is

So my theory of the moment is that Mother is some kind of deity. She doesn't have a name. She told them that she made it so they would never know death, so somehow she bestowed them with immortality (??). So maybe in her "family" NOT having a name is a sign of something, and because Jacob has a name he feels like a second-class citizen?? OMG, I am reaching here but my wee little brain needs something to wrap around. I actually, truly hope I am wrong and it's a better explanation that that.

I love this. I'm not buying the deity thing 100%, but that she thinks of a lack of name as having a significance. Like, she never had a name, then pregnant lady shows up and has 2 kids, but coincidentally only gives a name to one of them.  If you were that crazy nameless lady, maybe you'd see a meaning in this, and decide that the nameless boy was supposed to be your replacement.

The wine was spilled. If the man who has to replace Jacob has to drink that wine, there will be no new "replacer" with Jacob powers anymore!   Just a mere human in Jacobs place ...
Except he gave some to Richard

I thought I remembered that too.  In Ab Aeterno, he definitely offers Richard wine, but I don't know if he drank it!

OK, so now that we have established this, can anyone explain why during that conversation the smoke takes the position "They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same."  This is what Mother tells the two boys, so you'd think that this would be Jacob's position.  But instead Jacob doesn't believe this stance.  What's up with that!?

You said "any" help so I assume that means me too. I think the talk came during the 1860's right before the Black Rock showed up. There are discrepancies in the weather, but I know the Island has really wacky weather.

Good point about the ship. Duh!  OK. So in this scene the man that Jacob is talking to is actually the smoke in the form of Jacob's dead brother.  Right?

I'll also throw in my voice, as one of those dreaded "MIB backers" that I had not concluded that the person we saw sitting on the beach with Jacob was synonymous with the smoke.  For all I knew, he was just one of many bodies that the smoke took the form of.

It's difficult to describe the things we thought when some characters have no names and others take the shapes of other characters. But we'll manage. Without getting too mean.

I'm having a hard time piecing together when the conversation between Jacob and his brother occurred on the beach. Was is before the brother was thrown into the light cave or after?  Did the conversation about the brother wanting to kill Jacob happen before the brother was killed himself?  Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Claudia and Mother speak to each other in Latin, so I'd be hard pressed to guess that Mother was Greek. Although I DO like the point about her teaching Jacob the weaving which we saw had Egyptian themes and images in other episodes.

I also got the impression that Mother only claimed to have left the game to continue her story that there is nothing beyond the sea.
