Smokey existed before Jacob and his brother arrived.

Smokey played the part of Claudia... seducing Jacob's brother away from Jacob and his mother

We have seen smokey imitate dead people all through the series

The Darkness (smokey) has been wanting to be released since the beginning of time, Jacob's brother just shared the same goal of getting off the island

Hurley seems to be the only one that can see 'real' dead people... note how Jacob could not see Claudia, but his brother could

But Jacob couldn't see Claudia. So it's not like the times we've seen Smokey manifest as a dead person.

Huh? Who saw Christian besides Jack? Locke saw him with Claire and again with the Donkey wheel, but not with anyone else. Who saw Yemi besides Eko? Who saw Dave besides Hurley?... I think that smokey can appear w/o someone else seeing him... other than the target that is. Illana asked Ben who he was talking to when smokey appeared to him while he was digging his grave.

Sweet.... I concur, except:

I'm thinking that Ben takes the caretaker job. Jack may be Jacob's choice (as Jacob's brother seemed to have been mom's choice), but I'm guessing that Jack falls short (as Jacob's brother did) and Ben steps in at the end (reluctantly).... fire away Gridley!

Just thinking.... Two sides, one light, one dark... The light in the cave, smokey may be the dark to its light... Jacob's momma says that the light is in everyone... so is the dark in everyone?... is smokey just an accumulation of everyone's dark side?... did smokey exist before Jacob and his brother?... Was Claudia smokey in disguise?... I'm thinking that Jacob's brother died when he went into the light and became a part of what we call smokey. I'm thinking that the darkness has been trying to escape the island since before Jacob and his brother came along.... just sayin' :-)

Ben is a fanatic. He may have good motives, but his means are questionable. He also is a notorious liar.

Widmore appears to want to exploit the island, at least according to Ben (who is a notorious liar). He is not a very cuddly, likeable fellow at any rate.

I don't trust either. Ben may be doing what he is doing for altruistic reasons, but I'm pretty sure his reasons are quite selfish.

" Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy.

A Scotsman walking down the street sees a woman with perfect breasts. He says to her, 'Hey Miss, would you let me bite your breasts for $100?  'Are you nuts?' she replies, and keeps walking away.

He turns around, runs around the block and gets to the corner before she does. 'Would you let me bite your
breasts for $1,000 dollars?' he asks again.

'Listen, I'm not that kind of woman! Got it?'

So the Scotsman runs around the next block and faces her again,  'Would  you let me bite your breasts just
once for $10,000 dollars?'

She thinks about it for a while and says, 'Hmmm, $10,000
dollars. Okay, just once, but not here. Let's go to that alley over there.'

So they go into the alley, w here she takes off her blouse to reveal the most perfect breasts in the world. As soon as he sees them, he grabs them and starts caressing them, fondling them slowly, kissing them, licking them, burying his face in them, but not biting them.

The woman finally gets annoyed and asks, 'Well, are you going to bite them or not?'

'Nah,' says the Scotsman. 'Costs too much . . .

Ben does what he does to protect the island. He is machiavellian in that "the end justifies the means", but is it more evil to want to protect the island or to want to exploit it (as Widmore would like to)

Now you can say that Ben is a fanatic and thus amoral and evil, but less evil than Widmore.

Then again if you were protecting your family (or your country) from people that you believed to be evil, what would your limits be??? or would you also feel that "the end justifies the means"

Agreed.

This is the year of the rat. 2004 is the year of the monkey. The next year of the dragon is 2012.

Also two different actors play Jin's father and the shopkeeper.
