Episode 6x05 / Re: Are we being misled?
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:40:38 PM »
Smoke and Mirrors = deception and illusion - I think you are on the money, Jacob is bad - MiB is good or at least I feel their intentions are, maybe not the way they play them out.
We need to think, they have been here a very long time, they may have tried the nicely nicely approach but after hundreds of years have to resort to tougher and more devastating measures to reach their goals.

Think it was more out of design, Claire said that if Kate had Aaron she would kill her. Im thinking when the time comes for Kate to be exterminated by Claire she will use the 'your mother has him' line as a get out of jail card.

Episode 6x05 / Re: Why does MIB want the people in the Temple?
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:33:36 PM »
Ive been a big believer that MiB is good and Jacob is Evil since we first met them but recently Im waivering towards them both being bad or just 2 players in a game that will do anything to win.
If it wasnt the constant message of 'good vs evil' that TPTB keep throwing at us I would be more inclined to believe that we are watching some kind of game being played out, when rules come into play the old adage that rules are there to be broken springs to mind.
However I do feel there must be a good and a bad, and my opinion is still that of Jacob is bad, wrecking peoples lives for his own gain while the MiB does actually seem willing to help anyone who trusts him........

Spot on! Why didnt she tell Claire that Aaron's with his grandmother, safe and sound! 'I raised him'... good for you Kate, and I loved the look Locke gave her as she came out of the Temple with Claire and Sayid..... like 'are you kidding me?!'.

I asked on another thread 'who is the good guy?' :

Jacob who will save your son if you come to his Island..... but you never see your son again.
MiB who says 'join me by sundown or die'.

Free will, but not alot of choice.

Episode 6x05 / Re: Is "LOST", Lost?
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:16:11 PM »
Im in agreement with the theory that the answers we get are the important ones and the answers we dont get are not important to the whole Lost experience.
I have seen many films where, whilst I have enjoyed them, have felt they could have been better, I see Lost as the same sort of thing, we all have ideas and theories of whats going on, we buy into other peoples theories and if it turns out different why are we dissapointed? Because it wasnt how we thought it should be?
Well thats quite shallow IMO, Lost is written for a wide audience, and the old saying is that you cant please everyone. Lost is what it is, its a story (not real) written by writters as a fantasy journey and if we could guess what was happening it would be classed as predictable, so in reality they cant win.... its either boring, predictable or all over the place.
Its a TV show, and I will take it for what it is. If its bad writing fair enough but if its not what I expected then thats fine, its exciting.

BTW I happen to be loving the shows conclusion.

Episode 6x05 / Re: Dogan's story
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:51:51 PM »
This reminded me alot of how Ben seduced Juliet into coming to the Island, almost identical circumstances, praying on a desperate person who he needed on the Island with the promise of saving a loved one.... very difficult decision to make.
However with Juliet I seem to remember it wasnt untill she was on the Island she was told she could see her sister again.

I'll vouch for that, totally missed Jack in the corridore first time around but yeah, on a 2nd look he is clearly visible walking towards Sayid and Nadia as Omar is brought into the corridore on the stretcher!!!
Great spot BTW!

Episode 6x04 / Re: Candidate's vs Recruit's.
« on: March 03, 2010, 05:05:00 PM »
First thoughts after this weeks episode:

MiB has certainly stepped up the recruitment drive!

The whole free will thing surfaced again, basically his new recruits didnt have much choice, join him or die....... free will all the same :)

And it seems that Jacob's form of free will is nothing short of persuasive also!

In fact Jacobs tactics seem far more twisted, he tells Dogan that he will save his boy but Dogan will never see him again - an offer that you couldnt really refuse - MiB's tactic, plain and simple, join me or die..... so who's the good guy?

Season 6 / Re: Who do you think we will Lose by the end of LOST?
« on: February 28, 2010, 06:52:44 PM »
Nice ideas :)

Im convinced Jack will die, possibly, in fact certainly in the finale, as a hero.
I see it being a real tear jerker (for the ladies at least :P) and I also see it as a cheap side track for the writers to overshadow any big issues we the fans may have with the ending.

Just my personal feelings, especially with how they have been developing Jack's character this last 12 months or so.
Also to back up my thoughts, I beleive there were rumours that Jack wouldnt see out the Pilot episode at one point! So what better way for the writers to say 'we knew what we were doing from the start' than kill him off in the finale?
And to add, I have seen alot of Twin Peaks references throughout Lost (as have many of the more mature audience - Im 35 :)) and I see Jack as a kind of Dale (Agent) Cooper type character, I know Jack's a man od science where as Cooper was a man of faith, but this latest season we are seeing Jack's faith start to shine through.

All us 'Peakies' know what happened to Cooper, and what with all the mirror references this season, I can see a far too farmiliar fate awaiting Jack!

(Basically Dale Cooper ended up in the Black Lodge, was possesed by an evil spirit (Bob) and ended up smashing his head into a mirror asking 'How's Annie'..... in fact how is Annie?)

Episode 6x03 / Re: How did HURLEY get out of the car??
« on: February 26, 2010, 11:03:20 AM »
I didnt notice because being from the UK (we obviously drive on the opposite side) I just assumed he got out the other side! Same as I assumed Locke's ramp was same side as the steering column.....

Episode 6x04 / Re: Smoke and Mirrors.......
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:21:32 PM »
Just thinking about this maybe the Lostie's are actually the ones being deceived by Jacob or MiB, or maybe both of them, Jacob with his mirrors in the lighthouse (and the images they produce) and MiB providing the smoke, for what purpose I have no idea but its and idea none the less.

Christian, Yemi and Locke, it's not actually them on the Island (they are all dead), but a mirror reflection provided by the guise of the Smoke!

Penn and Teller spring to mind.........

Smoke and mirrors: a distortion of the truth. The use of deception, distraction and illusion to convince and manipulate.

Jacob = the convincer, MiB = The manipulator or vice versa?

Episode 6x04 / Smoke and Mirrors.......
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:10:19 PM »
I felt sure there would be a topic on this but I cant find one so Ill put it here, if I missed another similar thread please feel free to merge.

This season so far has had a huge emphasis on the mirrors (and reflections) - Jack looking at his cut neck on the plane, Jack looking into the temple pool, the mirrors in the lighthouse, Jack noticing his appendix scar in a miroor, the Alice book (looking glass), there are many. Also aside from Jacob the main mystery man, Locke/MiB/Smokie.
2 major questions for me at this point, why all the mirrors/reflections and what is the Smoke (yes we know its MiB/Locke but how did it come to be and what is it or should that be 'how' is it possible).

Which coins the phrase Smoke and Mirrors........

From Wikipedia:

Smoke and mirrors is a metaphor for a deceptive, fraudulent or insubstantial explanation or description. The source of the name is based on magicians' illusions, where magicians make objects appear or disappear by extending or retracting mirrors amid a confusing burst of smoke. The expression may have a connotation of virtuosity or cleverness in carrying out such a deception.

In the field of computer programming, it is used to describe a program or functionality that doesn't yet exist, but appears as though it does (cf. vaporware). This is often done to demonstrate what a resulting project will function/look like after the code is complete at a trade show, for example.

More generally, "smoke and mirrors" may refer to any sort of presentation by which the audience is intended to be deceived, such as an attempt to fool a prospective client into thinking that one has capabilities necessary to deliver a product in question.

So are we being deceived, or are we in line for and insubstantial explanation to the Lost universe? Are TPTB the illusionists and us the audience they intend to deceive? Basically, smoke and mirrors referrers the the illusions that magicians use to fool the audience into thinking that what they see is really happening. So can we assume that what we see isn't actually happening, be that on Island or off it..........
