Episode 6x08 / Re: Jacob Baptizing Richard
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:00:39 AM »
Yes, it is symbolic Baptism.  Baptism is itself symbolic.  Many people are so resistant to any kind of Biblical reference that they refuse to acknowledge its presence, as if to do so would be some kind of admission of faith...which it is not.  This was similar to the way that many folks reacted when I started bringing up time travel after Desmond's first "Flashes before his eyes" experience...afraid that acknowledging the presence of time travel would make them a sci-fi nerd...which it doesn't.

Well, it's pretty tough to ignore the Biblical references when Ricardus himself was reading a Bible.  LOL
Amen!  That & how important isabella's cross was to the story.

Ah, yes.  The cross necklace.  I'm sorry, but Ricardus's backstory was so freakin' incredibly awesome.  I am still riding the high.

Episode 6x08 / Re: Jacob wore BLACK when visiting Ilana
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:58:19 AM »
the question is... was he wearing the exact same thing the other time we had seen him visiting her?

OOOOOH!  Very good point!  What episode was that?  It was the one where we see Jacob touch the candidates, right?

I definitely agree - Nestor was unbelievable in the episode but I still say hands down.. Michael's whole scene with Ilana is the stuff Emmys are made of

They all deserve it.  Michael, Terry, and Nestor.

Episode 6x08 / Re: So can Man In Black be killed?
« on: March 24, 2010, 10:44:55 AM »
So all Jacob needs to do is prove that 1 in 10,000 people tested are good and he wins/proven correct?

Aha!  That's it!  The one candidate who is not corrupted by MIB will replace Jacob.  I know this seems self-evident, but sometimes we dig so deep to see the meaning, that the simple things get missed!

So, does that mean that everyone else dies??

I also think it was quite interesting how closely that scene mimicked the scene where Sayid is "dipped" and held into the Temple Healing Springs.  That was my first thought when it was happening.  I have to agree, however, that symbolic baptism is very evident.

Episode 6x08 / Jacob wore BLACK when visiting Ilana
« on: March 24, 2010, 12:29:58 AM »
This struck a chord immediately for me.  Have there been any other scenes where we have seen Jacob in black?  Was he in black all the time when he visited off-island?  Is there any kind of pattern here?

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head was that Christian sometimes appeared in white, sometimes in black.  Is there anyone out there who can make any sense of this?  It is very intriguing to me.  There has got to be SOME reason why Jacob was in black.

Or, maybe not.  But I'd like to think there is a reason.

Thoughts?

Richard's bible. I think it was Luke 4 where Jesus heals people simply by placing his hands on them.

So glad you caught that!  All  I saw was Luke and I forgot to go back and pause it because I was SO into the episode!

Official Polls / Re: Episode 6x09 Rating
« on: March 24, 2010, 12:16:15 AM »
10 x 10 x 100 x 1000 x 10,000

How many tens is that?  Not enough.  This episode was truly an epic - and a very touchingly shockingly personal one at that.  Hurley getting to Richard before UnLocke did very well might be the turning point for the end.  Richard was truly saved.  Now he can do some saving.  Perfection.

He IS an arse kicker.  Who knew?

It was definitely a different side of Jacob that we have not yet seen.  Maybe he was crankier a couple hundred years ago?

I thought it was one of the better episodes of the series.  It felt more like a feature film to me.

My thoughts exactly.  I am glad that others came away feeling the same way.  I felt Richard's pain.  I literally hurt for him.  The scene with the captain coming down below and starting to kill everyone off?  OMG!  I could not watch.  And then ol smokey rolls in.  Wow.  Torturous.

when jacob says MIB thinks everyone has it in their nature to sin. this is the state of nature philosophy of Thomas Hobbes, yet MIB is now in the body of John Locke, pretty awesome

sweet

Smashing the bottle on the log is a metaphor for sinking the entire Island in the ocean, setting him free to infect the world directly with the dark.

Ooooooooh!  You are right!  Wow...that's awesome.

Loved all of the answers but the first 40 minutes were very slow, so very slow.

Loved the answers, could of been delivered better.

NO!!!!!!!!!  Please, tell me there is sarcasm in your post.  I thought it was incredible.  Every.  Single.  Minute.  I was completely glued to my seat.

Episode 6x08 / Re: MIB kills the Believers. Saw weakness in Locke.
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:53:37 PM »
I may need help on this one but, with Locke saying he looked into the eye of the island and what he saw was beautiful.  Didn't someone tonight saying something like it was dark and evil instead of beautiful

Yeah, that would be Jacob.  But I don't think he was referring to the island, I think he was referring to MIB.  And the island was the way to keep him from escaping to the rest of the world.
