The apollo moonshots had saturn rockets and had to reach an escape velocity of over 25000 miles per hour. Sound travels 742 mph at sea level, so 25000 divided by 742 equals (anybody have a calculator). My guess would be mach 33.
Most ICBM's travel at over 15000 mph and interceptor missiles travel even faster. But, here, ballistics mean nothing anyway (there is another unknown variable). We know that the rocket couldn't have been going too fast cause if it was, the kinetic energy from hitting the ground would (even with a small rocket) would have blown up the entire area.
If you want to see what happens when a rocket or jet hits something solid, watch the you tube video of a F-4 Phantom hitting a cement bunker (type in F-4 Phantom and bunker).
The airplane literally evaporates.
Hmmm, I'm wondering if after the rocket makes it to the apex, it could increase speed with he rocket still firing, but now going down....I never had calculus or trig...whichever may apply...
