Episode 6x16 / Misdirection

First, let me say I loved the finale. I cried more than I cried in Up and Lorenzo's Oil combined.

Thinking back on the Sideways world, though, I realized there was a ton of misdirection this season. This is a common storytelling device, but I remember:

--Sunken island in Sideways world (that was only for the viewers, not the inhabitants of Sideways land)
--Juliet's "it worked" (we thought it must have meant detonating Jughead and creating a Sideways world)
--Daniel Faraday suggesting that a nuclear bomb created the Sideways world

I'm sure there are other instances.

Don't forget that Charlotte is CS Lewis. Her name has intentional meaning. Given this Chronicles of Narnia reference, I think it makes a lot more sense that she has been on the island before. Witness:  A) her recognition of the Dharma polar bear, B) her "I'm back home at last" look when she first fell into the water and splashed around a bit. She would be like the Pevensies, who return to Narnia at any old time, and I'm thinking especially of the beginning of Prince Caspian, where they return for the first time. Charlotte may very well know about the Purge because she was ON the island (in some unknown capacity, at some unknown age).

There is no pending purge. These guys are just clearing the way so Widmore Inc can move on in. Disabling an deadly island-wide gas bomb helps.

I gave it a 3. Weakest episode I can remember. Ticking time bomb stops at countdown to one second? Good grief---that was beaten to death in Alias. Ben saying "I have some information that can help you"? Seen that a thousand times. Locke going along with him? Like Charlie Brown kicking Lucy's football. Insertion of a previously unknown character into scenes we've already witnessed? Didn't work with Nikki, either. And it served little purpose:  In my mind the melodrama of Goodwin took away from, rather than adding to, the torture Juliet has already displayed over not leaving the island because of her sister. I thought Ben's "you're mine" hissy fit sold out the quiet, creepy confidence he exuded through all of season 2 and early season 3. And what's with the "show everyone in the cast for at least 30 seconds" design of this episode? That has rarely been a requirement in the past, and it took away from the narrative pace, whatever there was of it. I was glad to hear the whispers again, and to see evidence that the rest of the others are still on the Island. Charles Widmore's appearance was anticlimactic, but maybe that was because I saw Alan Dale in the opening credits. No show is perfect. On to next week.

I think we are going to see Naomi's boat coming and they are also bad people. Likely Dharma. The losties will have to ban together with Richard and the others to battle Dharma and then get off the island.

This seems the most natural thing to expect. Dharma didn't just disappear, and they're the only off-island folks we've heard of who would want to kill Ben. The fact that Naomi conversed with Mikhail (the last remnant of Dharma) makes this even more likely. Since they've both killed a bunch of each other, the union of Losties + Others presents all sorts of opportunities to run with the forgiveness/redemption themes of the show.

The implication in the Flame station is that Mikhail is doing extensive internet (or other) research to figure out who the Losties are and what their deal is. Reasonable enough. But then how does Juliet know that Sawyer killed someone in cold blood?  It's not like there's an internet site with "people who kill in cold blood because the Terminator tricks them" lists. This would seem to give credence to the various time-travel and alternate-worlds theories making the rounds...

All the losties have done for her is kill her boyfriend.

I thought this was the most important revelation of the episode, even though it was merely implied. We've been wondering how Juliet became a steely-eyed killer? That's how. Throw Locke's sub bombing into the mix, and those darn Losties have ruined whatever hope she has.

Still trying to figure out the significance of the long focus on the tightening rope at the end. I suspect she'll hang someone, just as Ethan did.

I am more curious as to what Sawyer was looking at when he found the shoe in the tree.
Hurley even asked him about it.

....and Sawyer answered the question at the end of the episode:  He saw that someone had been digging.

You know, I've never been a fan of the Vincent=Smokey theory, but when I saw him pull off that blanket, I became a believer...

And I don't think the spiders were Smokey, unless Smokey can, in addition to shape shifting, chemically synthesize paralyzing toxins.

Still, that was an obvious smokey sound--it's the reason Nikki panicked.

I remember her most from "Kitsunegari", the sequel to "Pusher", one of the greatest X-Files episodes. She was Robert Modell's sister, and wonderfully creepy in her few short scenes...

Yes, or every other line Sawyer makes. He's the in-joke for all us Gen-Xers in the audience. The funniest line in all of Lost? "Well, you're the one who fell for the old wookiee-prisoner gag!"
