penny did have something to do with the island--she was looking for des, she hired the guys that were in the arctic waiting for the signal, and she was the one that charlie talked to in 'the looking glass' episode and told him it wasn't her boat.  her boat also picked up the oceanic 6.

anyway, i think the ending was jack's creation.  it's what he envisioned, and who he wanted to be a part of his afterlife.

i'm so glad to hear that there are no plans to close this site down as of yet!  i'm still digesting what i've now watched twice and can't quite wrap my head around!
thanks to everyone involved in running this wonderful site, and to everyone who has posted a question to ponder, an answer to debate, and/or a theory to debunk!
i too, came to find answers somewhere around the beginning of season 2, and wouldn't have made it through the past 6 seasons without everyone here.  and i look forward to continuing to disect the entire series with you all for a long time!

in my opinion, des ran over locke to make him have a near death experience in order to have flashes of his island universe.  like charlie did with des when charlie ran the car off the road.

i also think we'll find out next week who the boy is

And I am having trouble reconciling Des causing the 815 crash in the context of Jacob "bringing" them to the island. We know (or believe) the plane crashed because Des was late pushing the buttons. But we also have indications that Jacob "brought" these people to the island because they were "candidates." So if he indeed brought flight 815 (and the 'candidates') to the island, was it just a coincidence that Des forgot the buttons and caused the crash? Or did Jacob manipulate that too? Because otherwise wouldn't the plane have just kept going? As far as I know, it wasn't planning on a soft landing on the beach.

Or, is it the reverse - did Jacob know the plane was going to crash (maybe he is godlike and can see all things past and present) and touched the people he knew would be on it when it crashed so that when they did arrive they would be viable candidates? And if he could see that, why not see his own death and prevent it?

AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

we know the plane was 1000 miles off course when it crashed, and we know desmond failed to push the button, and we also know that jacob said he brought the people to the island.  so how about if jacob was the cause of the plane to be off course?  then the sequence of events occurs which cause des to not push the button and the plane crashes

Eloise was trying to keep Des away from Penny back in the original timeline too. Remember when he went to buy the ring. She specifically told him he would not marry Penny and that he'd do the sailing race and push the button to save the world.  She said that if he "doesn't do those things," that "every single one of us is dead."

so if penny is desmond's constant, and eloise keeps him away from penny, he can continue to time travel?  as long as he isn't grounded so to speak by having constant contact with penny?

i think widmore knows des can't die yet, but wanted to test his abilities and how much des actually 'knows' about both universes.  besides, before the test, des was not willing to help charles, but when the test was done, des was all ok, lets go, what do you want me to do.  so maybe widmore was also trying to show des another outcome

charlie only knows of penny because of desmond's flash---when des was attempting to rescue charlie from the car, charlie held up his hand, palm to the window, and des had a flash of when charlie was really drowning and wrote 'not pennys boat' on his hand and held it up to the window in the hatch door.   this triggered a bit of memory of the island universe for des, but he asked charlie who is penny when they got out of the water, and somewhere in the conversation charlie told des that he'd better go find penny.
but he didn't know who she was.

But why does Des go from telling Widmore he's totally committed to what he needs - just tell me what you want me to do.  Then along comes Sayid who says come with me.  And Des is all "okey dokey" it going with him. 

What's up with that?

i think des knows what he needs to do, and whatever that is, he needs the 815ers to help him.  he sees sayid and recognizes him, but doesn't know that he has been 'claimed' therefore he follows sayid thinking they will go to the 815ers.  while at the same time in the alt universe, he is in the limo asking for the manifest from flight 815 so that he can contact the ones he needs from the plane.
