Episode 5x04 / Jin goes with the island...but the helicopter does not?
« on: February 05, 2009, 02:00:23 AM »
Goes with island:
Zodiak, between boat & shore, elevation = 0
Jin, near exploded boat within 5 miles of shore, elevation = 0

Does not go with island:
Helicopter with O6, probably got to within a couple miles from shore, elevation = ~1000ft

So, both the Zodiak & the helicopter were closer to the shoreline than Jin, but it was Jin that goes with the island and not the helicopter.  Hmmm....  I'm thinking that the island's radius of protection is shaped like a bell curve - or like the gravity well illustrated on Dan's Oxford lab's chalkboard.  A good illustration is the red curve in the top graph found here:
Jin, if at the coordinates (-2,0), could go with the island, while the helicopter, if at the coordinates (-1.5,.2), might not.

Do you think we'll ever get a clear explanation of this possible discrepancy, or was this just a plot contrivance by the writers, never to be explained?

Episode 5x02 / Dan deceives Charlotte
« on: January 22, 2009, 02:28:16 AM »
I don't get it.  Season 4 Dan is befuddled, and it's Charlotte that helped him with his memory problems, until Dan discovers Desmond is his constant.  Now tonight, Dan sees that Charlotte is pulling an Eloise, but does nothing to warn her, inform her or help her.  I guess he's in the clear, since he can go chat with his constant every other time jump, so he can let his closest friend kick the bucket.

Episode 4x12 / Desmond can not die
« on: May 16, 2008, 02:03:37 AM »
One of the biggest payoffs at the end of the series surely must be Desmond's & Penny's reunion.  You know TPTB are gonna milk that thing for every tear they possibly can.  As Laklost has observed, tho there's no chemistry between Kate & Jack, their relationship is a central pivot for the show.  However, Des & Penny, exist for us as the quintessential long-distance romance beset by intrigue, miscommunication and the malfeasance of foreign powers (ala Much Ado About Nothing).  They're the ones we long to see reunited.  Ergo, Des can't die in a huge C4 explosion on the freighter.

Of course, moments after they break from their embrace, they start arguing over what color to paint the flat, Des complains about stale scones, and Penny wonders how to convince Des that he ought to go get a haircut.

Episode 4x12 / Bearing of 305 (I'm no Boy Scout, but...)
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:50:20 AM »
When you leave the island, you must go on a compass bearing of 305 degrees (Ben to Michael, Daniel to Lapidus).  Yet when Des reminds the 2nd in command to follow the same bearing of 305, it's back to the island.  Isn't that in the opposite direction? Shouldn't it be 305 - 180 = 125 degrees?  What crazy quantum physics from Daniel's notebook or chalkboard could explain this Boy Scout mystery?

Episode 4x12 / Oceanic 6's Payout: How huge must it be?
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:15:00 AM »
It wasn't surprising when Sayid said he could afford private golf course greens fees in the Seychelles on his Flight 815 survivor's payout. Perhaps he was using Ben's slush funds anyway. But now we have Sun buying a controlling interest in a huge South Korean company.  How much would that take? US $100 million equivalent? $250 million? Such a settlement seems high, and rather unlikely.

Episode 4x10 / Frank's Sat. Phone
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:49:01 AM »
When his phone's screen showed the mercs approach, each merc was represented by a distinct dot.  Did they each have a beacon on them, like Charlotte & Miles when they parachuted in, or is it detecting them like Ripley's gizmo detects aliens in Aliens?  This takes us back to the question, is this technology from the future?

And why is Frank so sweet on the Losties?  And is it true that Miles doesn't cotton what Keamy & co. are up doing?

Episode 4x10 / Best Line of the Night:
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:36:32 AM »
Daniel: Where do you suppose all this power comes from?
Charlotte: Add that one to the list, Dan.

We've been there!

Episode 4x10 / Charlotte: Does something?
« on: May 02, 2008, 01:57:31 AM »
Oh so classic when Rose channels Sawyer and calls Charlotte 'Red'.  Not 'Wendy', but close!

Her Korean sounded pretty good. Was she born to a Brit stationed in Korea when she was a child? If she started to study when older, was it for her achaeological interests?  I suspect she's connected to Mr. Paik somehow.  If so, then did Widmore tell Abaddon to include her on the mission at his buddy Mr. Paik's request?

Episode 4x10 / 4 x 09: Spy vs. Spy... 4 x 10: Love vs Ghosts
« on: May 02, 2008, 01:34:28 AM »
For those who were not pleased with last week's foray into Ben as Bond, James Bond, lo & behold: this week's episode was a Lifetime movie of the perfect relationship gone bad + Ghost.  Which proves the point that if any one episode's focus is not your cup of tea, wait a week, and you'll get something completely different.

What was striking about this episode, with all the ghosts coming out of the woodwork, was that it seemed like people's perceptions were heightened, more than usual:
   1) Daniel, who is usually befuddled, saw into the heart of the matter concerning the distrust for him & Charlotte
   2) Jin sensing Charlotte was following their convo in Korean
   3) Juliet revealing she knew Jack's kiss was a show for Kate, whom he really loves
   4) Jack realizing that his doubts about being a Father to Aaron were quickly confirmed by Charlie's message
I would assume that with ghosts running around, both on the island and in L.A., people's hair was perhaps standing on end, just like in the movie Ghost, among countless others.

Episode 4x09 / Juliet causes Alex's death?
« on: April 26, 2008, 08:24:07 PM »
In disobeying Ben, and letting Daniel/Charlotte neutralize the poison gas at the Tempest, did Juliet take a critical weapon away from Ben that he could've used against Keamey & his merc buddies?  Will Ben come to believe this, and blame Juliet for Alex's death?  Does Jack get off the island, knowing that Ben is after Juliet, and that's why he wants to get back, to save her? And is Kate doubly reluctant to help Jack get back, because she knows he's pining for her nemesis Juliet?

Episode 4x09 / Charlotte: Do More!
« on: April 25, 2008, 03:36:19 AM »
When will she do some interesting anthropology/archaeology work on the island? Instead she's played chemist & nursemaid while camping on the beach with the Losties.

Episode 4x09 / Ben: Renaissance Man
« on: April 25, 2008, 02:50:47 AM »
Accomplished Pianist. Diabolical leader.  Decent cook. Horse Master. Handy with a taser-thingamajig. Fluent in Berber.  Master of space & time.

I'm curious if anyone can identify the classical piece Ben's playing when Locke & the Gang come in with the code.  I'm guessing Russian composer. And surely the choice of this piece was purposeful.  Or perhaps just to create a sense of foreboding...

Episode 4x09 / Flirty, nosy Kate
« on: April 25, 2008, 02:38:35 AM »
Did it strike anyone else as odd that Kate's giving herself a sponge bath in a tidal pool in the middle of camp, making googly eyes at Jack, then invading his privacy?  Hasn't she seen or sensed that Juliet has taken possession of Jack?  Perhaps she knew that Juliet was on corpse detail today, and made her move.  But is Kate ever a pinball, having just ditched Sawyer.

Episode 4x09 / Super Claire!?!
« on: April 25, 2008, 01:21:59 AM »
RPG annihilates house, destroying everything but the frame...and super Claire.  If she could survive that, then why not Patchy in close proximity to a grenade detonation?  Anyway, I was so thinking this is where Claire would meet her maker, but no, if she's gonna die, they're gonna tease us for a while longer. Perhaps with Rousseau, Carl, Alex, the ship's doctor, the two Bedouins, Nadia, Widmore's man in Iraq, several of the strike team, and three redshirts, Claire dying in this episode would've gotten lost amidst all the other carnage.

Episode 4x08 / Mr. Friendly gets friendly
« on: March 21, 2008, 12:30:55 AM »
Now we have definitive proof what Mr. Friendly meant when he said to Kate "You're not my type".  Nice to see that an Other can cut loose some when out in the real world.

I had thought at first that he had Patchy's & Michael's ability to not die, but then it became clear that his mission to recruit Michael was about 30 days before Sawyer got his revenge.
