People have been coming to the island for hundreds if not thousands of years. Prior to the invention of aircraft, the only other way to arrive on the island would have been by boat. Keeping in mind that ships constructed from metal weren’t designed until the late 19th century, most non-metal hulled vessels able to traverse the Pacific Ocean would have looked similar to the Black Rock. There is no reason to believe that the ships talked about in this thread are the same boat.

That said, it is possible that the Black Rock was in sight of the island several days before crashing into it. It is common for a ship to stay in deeper waters until a smaller party aboard a dinghy examines the seabed closer inland and scouts the actual land for dangers/resources. The Black Rock might have encountered the terrible storm after navigating to the island in more clement weather.

However, it appears as if the statue was first seen by Ricardo’s “colleague” during the storm. I am untroubled by assuming that the two ships are independent of one another.

to what end? why show 2 ships extremely resemblant of each other and they arent the same this late in the game?

Good point. I can see either event (ie same ship, different ship) happening. However, a closer look at the White Rock from "The Incident, Part 1" reveals that it has an aft-mast that's roughly half the height of the fore- and main-masts. On the other hand, the Black Rock's aft-mast is the same height as its main as shown in "Ab Aeterno." Of course, this wouldn't be the first time that the same object appears dissimilar in different episodes.

I think the intent is that Jacob has repeatedly brought people to the island.

Episode 6x08 / Re: hell...

I thought MIB needed a body to appear as the person. How did Isabella's body get to the island for MIB to utilize? If her body isn't there (and I'm sure its not) then MIB should be able to appear as any dead person in the history of the world. Right? Perhaps Isabella's soul was tied to the necklace or tied to Richard himself. MIB was then able to assume her identity?

I am having difficulty accepting the fact that she appeared to Richard. Someone please help explain how this might have happened without the body.

Richard's bible. I think it was Luke 4 where Jesus heals people simply by placing his hands on them.

It was Jacob's cabin at some point. Remember, Ilana first went to the cabin looking for Jacob, then remarked that someone else had been using the cabin. She saw a portion of Jacob's tapestry, which led her to the statue to find Jacob.

Background info from Wikipedia:
Jughead appeared on the Island in 1954—the very same year the US conducted a series of high-yield thermonuclear tests in the South Pacific dubbed Operation Castle. The average bomb during 1954’s Operation Castle had a yield that was roughly 500 times greater than the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. The craters left from these bombs were expected to be approximately 1 mile in diameter.

Episode 5x16 / Re: in the SHADOW?
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:25:22 PM »
When I hear “under the shadow of” I think “under the influence/control of” (eg Under the shadow of the law). Therefore, use of the word “under” connotes a compliant relationship.

However, the expression “in the shadow of” makes me think of a comparison to an exemplar (eg In the shadow of an older brother) or the aftermath of a tragedy/struggle/error (eg In the shadow of The Holocaust/slavery/Bush).

The other way to interpret either phrase is literally. Given Richard’s answer, “in the shadow of” makes more sense to me.

The other question we should be asking is which definition of “lies” is correct? Is it “dwells” or is it “deceives”? Depending on the answer, the identity of Richard and Ilana’s savior/protector could change.

Episode 5x16 / Re: he "watched them die"
« on: May 18, 2009, 12:44:28 PM »
Okay, I'm going to just come out and say it, I didn't hear Jacob say "They're coming". I did hear him say "coming" twice, but not "they're coming". If anyone can tell me how they know for sure what he said, I'd appreciate it. I'm sure it's possible that I got an audio burp or something, but twice in a row, at the exact same moment that a character says something??

I've watched the episode twice now, and I swear he said "They're coming."

I don't have closed caption...which I guess is what you really need to confirm.

To answer your question, Jacob does in fact say "They're coming" both times.

ABC.com's Full Episode Player has the option to turn closed captions on. Just start playing the video and then click on "Settings" on the top right-hand side of the window. You might have to close your browser and restart the video for them to appear.

Episode 5x16 / Re: Do you know how badly I want to kill you?
« on: May 15, 2009, 09:58:00 PM »
Anyone else think that question was a rhetorical inquiry based on friendship rather than a threat? Suppose Jacob wanted to be killed and the two were trying to find a way to break whatever rules prevented him from dying.

No. I think he was dead serious. He had a very deadly look about him. He really wanted Jacob dead. And he couldn't just break the rules, it seems. He needed to find the loophole. And now that Jacob is dead, things will change. At least that is what he said, he said that once Jacob was dead things would be different. Unless, of course, he ends up being wrong.

DEAD wrong!

Dead funny reply.

the what looked like a train schedule on the wall of ms. hawkings room with all of the flip numbers like in the swan station.

and the world map on the floor

Sledge, could you please get the Lat/Long coordinates again? The one that was posted is in the process of flipping. Ideally, an image of the board before the numbers started changing, and an image of the numbers after would be appreciated.
