Title: What Richard Said About the Fence
Post by: hyperform on March 05, 2009, 03:26:57 AM
When he came into the camp he said, your fence can't stop us or something to that effect.
Thoughts?
Title: What Richard Said About the Fence
Post by: TheBrightandTheDark on March 05, 2009, 03:28:51 AM
Paraphrasing here, but Richard said something like, "That [fence] may keep some things out, but not us."

So...wtf? Is he insinuating that he and the Others can walk through a microwave fence without getting hurt? Or is he saying that they're smart like Kate/Locke/Sayid and chopped down a tree to shimmy over the fence?

It sounded more mysterious than the practical tree-bridge that we saw before. Add that to the fact that he doesn't age, that he only has like, 3 outfits (but he keeps wearing that same damn dark shirt), and that he never seems surprised when people tell him the weirdest crap...??

Maybe the Others are all already dead...maybe they dug a tunnel under the fence...maybe they beat the code out of a lost Dharmite...

but that's still a weird thing for him to say, right?

Don't take this the wrong way but, can we merge our threads? LOL!!

Yeah, Richard was kind of spooky this episode which is the Richard I like.  Sometimes the Others seem like regular people and sometimes they seem like creepy ghosts.

When Amy walked through the fence when our Losties came back to Dharma Headquarters she put in earplugs. She grabbed them out of the box with the security keypad on it, and then after Sayid/Miles/Juliet/Jin walked through it, she took them out. And when we saw Mikhail go through the fence, his ears bled.

Also, as far as keeping some things out, I think they specifically meant Smokie. Just my theory.

I think that there is a tunnel.
Title: Re: What Richard Said About the Fence
Post by: TheBrightandTheDark on March 05, 2009, 03:37:17 AM
So maybe Richard/Others found the earplugs, or found a tunnel? I could buy that.
Title: Re: What Richard Said About the Fence

Or climbed over the fence with a tree?  The Dharma fence seems so laughably ineffective now that anything is possible.
Title: Re: What Richard Said About the Fence
Post by: TheBrightandTheDark on March 05, 2009, 03:45:15 AM
Still...he kind of said it like what he meant to say was, "Hahaha! You silly mortal! You thought a microwave fence would deflect the likes of my godliness?!?!"...even though all he did was scoff and shrug... :)
Title: Re: What Richard Said About the Fence
Post by: Maxor127 on March 05, 2009, 03:47:43 AM
Yeah, that would be cool, but Richard had to ruin it by saying that the fence can't stop "us" as in all Others and as we've seen, a lot of Others are pretty much like disorderly pirates.

That's how I took it to Mrs Alpert.
My question is how come Juliet didn't know about the ear plugs?  and I was waiting for Juliet to tell the woman not to try and put in the emergency code to silently alert them (dharma) that there were intruders. I know they were trying to keep a low profile that they were there before but I am surprised Juliet wasn't a little smarter than that, and she was tricked.

Oooo sorry hyperform. They'll be merged and then we can all post in yours.  ;) :)

maybe they dug a tunnel under the fence

I just remembered. I'm almost certain there either is, or will be soon, at least a tunnel under New Otherton. When Ben was holed up with the Losties dealing with Keamy and Co., Ben went through his closet to a stone room wherein, we presume, he summoned Smokey. We know now that Smokey resides at The Temple, so it seems logical Ben would have to go somewhere else to get to it. So there probably is at least one, if not a series of, tunnels running to different parts of the island.

Smokey-tunnels remind me of Jacqueline Carey's "The Sundering." Underground tunnels, dark and mysterious and mystical, opens to very specific & special places, don't want to get trapped in there, and you don't want to run into any evil things in there...

Well, she wouldn't have pulled out secret earplugs for nothing...the fence is obviously a an audible frequency...I think Richard was insinuating that the D.I. could keep out unsuspecting victims---and animals who, obviously, cannot wear earplugs...(Because they can't afford to buy them...  ;) )

I couldn't believe that the Losties let her walk right up to the code panel without watching more closely.

I think they were trying to play it like they had no idea, but were shrewd enough to surmise what it was. If Juliette had went up and stared over her shoulder, it would have given too much away.

I couldn't believe that the Losties let her walk right up to the code panel without watching more closely.

I couldn't believe that A) Something as sophisticated as a sonic fence can be defeated by, basically, sticking your fingers in your ears. and B) Juliet didn't know about the Secret Earplug Trick, having lived in New Otherton for three years.

Well if they explain everything about him, it might ruin his effectiveness as a character.  I was disappointed by Mr. Friendly when we started learning everything about him.  He was a creepy kidnapper and turned out to be a helpless croney with a penchant for hispanic men and didn't really seem all that bad of a guyl.

My guess was that Dharma knew about using earplugs, and Juliet wasn't Dharma, she was a de facto "Other". There may not have been any need for earplugs if 90% of the people living in Otherton when Juliet was there were Others lol.

The security code, maybe not everyone knew about it except for a few people Ben chose to tell. Not sure anyone outside of Alex knew about it. Why nobody else should know about it, though, doesn't make much sense lol...

It seemed to me that Richard made the comment to be more menacing than it was. Like he wanted Horace to think the others could just walk through it, but it probably is as simple as some kind of tunnel, or A-frame ladder they use to get back and forth across. Of course that totally ruins the mysticism behind the character. I did like how Richard had a very "holier than thou" attitude coming in to the camp, and then Sawyer just shut him down with all of the tidbits about 20 years ago.
Title: Re: What Richard Said About the Fence

Yeah, Sawyer got under his skin a bit...did anyone else think that Richard was almost taking on the way that Sawyer spoke as they were talking? When Sawyer said something like, "Do you still think I'm with the DI?" and Richard mumbles, "Guess I don't," I was like, why is Richard Southern all of a sudden??

Probably Richard has found the secret to eternity (Ankh & Anubis).

Anyways, I'm betting that Richard isn't hurt by the sonic fence and will be able to walk through it. After that, he could probably disable the fence somehow and let the other Others in.

Richard is ageless.  The Egyptian anhk gives long life.  The island jumps around the globe.  Put it all together, what's that spell?

The island is the lost city of Atlantis.
It once appeared off the coast of Egypt, and they brought gifts, built the statue and stayed.
Then the island moved on, creating the legend of Atlantis and why no one can find it.
Richard is a decendent if not an original Egyptian from those days.

Yes, but it could also have appeared near Greece in the past. Have we seen anyone wearing togas yet?

Right, huh? Why not just go over it like Kate did? Or move from the Temple to the Barracks through its underground tunnels? There's something else going on here....it's just too weird that Ben's barracks had the Smokey-cave in it, yet they have a sonic fence to keep it out. Maybe Smokey isn't too smart.  :-\

Didn't Mikhail survive the fence, after being pushed into it?

Actually, didn't Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Miles and Daniel all just survive after walking into it?

Or was it a different kind of fence Mikhail was pushed into? I can't remember.

Actually, didn't Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Miles and Daniel all just survive after walking into it?

Or was it a different kind of fence Mikhail was pushed into? I can't remember.

One of the Losties said that Mikhail was dead...and none of our DI/Losties got frothy-at-the-mouth or ear-bleedy, so maybe it was just set to "stun" on them...

Right.  Horace requested that the fence be turned up because he knew the Others would be coming.  The setting was low enough that it wasn't serious.  Which makes Richard's ability to get past the fence more impressive.

The fence has different settings.  I can be lethal, it can cause what we saw with Patchy, or it can just cause unconsciousness & a headache like we saw last night.  I don't think that earplugs would work with the higher level settings.

ok so a. it would be imposible for juliet to know what the code to alert the darma was becasue obviously the code can be changed, otherwise a darma could tell a other and there goes the point of the whole fense. b. the fense definatly has diffrent settings ( horance telling the security guy to set the fense to max and juliet setting it to max to keep the smoke monster out.) this accounts for the diffrent reactions while passing through the fense.
c. based on what we saw from the darma security center there are cameras surrounding the barracks near the fense, if richard did indeed pass through the fense they could view this tape and see how

I like this theory. On a side note, Richard may be ageless, but i dont think he is immortal. During the purge (in episode "The Man Behind the Curtain") he is seen with a gas mask on. If he is in fact immortal, there would be no need for the gas mask.

That gas mask idea brings up a good point.
As for the island being near Egypt at one time, I agree too. When Ben first moved the island, it looked like it could have went underwater. So the Atlantis legend works too.

if it did go underwater, no one on the island seemed to notice.

I think when Richard was talking to Horace and said the fence can't keep him or other things out, he was talking about Smokie. If LOST continues on the Anibus track, then this island (or somewhere on it) could be the afterworld and that is why Richard doesn't age and Smokie may exist. That could also explain why we can see people's past's in Smokie, he himself may have something to do with the afterlife???

Didn't Horace tell the guy to turn it up after Richard had already gotten into the camp??

Yeah, he went out and talked to Richard, then came in and asked Sawyer how deep he buried the bodies, and then started telling that guy to call the arrow and get the heavy ordinance and turn up the fence. I agree with you that it was in preperation for the onslaught of the others, but I didn't know if you thought that it was already at Maximum when Richard came through it.

The island is the lost city of Atlantis.
It once appeared off the coast of Egypt, and they brought gifts, built the statue and stayed.
Then the island moved on, creating the legend of Atlantis and why no one can find it.

The "real" Atlantis (according to some archaeologists) was located at San Torini(sp?) in the Mediterranean.  Ruins of what is referred to as Minoan culture (because of a lot of bull imagery) show frescos depicting a city built on the side of an island.  There is evidence of a supervolcano island eruption (that certainly would have destroyed the city and created a tsunami so that it would have appeared to "disappear into the sea") where the fresco shows an island used to be.  Also, ancient Egyptian records refer to a culture in that location that they had interaction with (although they had a different name for it than Atlantis).  The Egyptian influence on our island maybe ties in with the real Atlantis.  Speaking Latin probably doesn't match too well -- even though it's the same area of the world, I'd think Latin was a much later language than the time of the Minoans.  But maybe.

Im rewatching this epi, and and i noticed when Richard first shows up he speaks with Horace... both calling each other by their last names... Mr. Alpert, and Mr. Goodspeed. interesting... anyway in their convo Richard says somethign along the lines of " the fences can keep alot of people out but not us. the thing that keeps us out is our agreement. " thats just paraphraseing but he uses "us" maybe just refering to The Others. or is he refering to horace and himself. because he uses "our agreement" when talking about them both. kinda taking the mind frame of the thread talking about what Claire meant when she told Kate to "Not bring him back" and who is she talkign about? aaron? locke? ben? either way ... im takign that mind frame and using it to wonder who Richard is talkign about when he uses " us", and "our".. what do u think?

Well the sonic fences practically fried Mikhail when he was pushed into it (although it apparently didn't kill him) - so Richard may have been fibbing.

It may well be that the sonic fences don't affect Richard. We already know that he's different to the other Others, due to Ben remarking that he doesn't have birthdays.

When Mikhail got microwaved, Kate (or Locke or Sayid) said that he was dead. They checked his pulse. So it seems like "practically fried" is an accurate way to describe him. Especially all frothy-at-the-mouth and ear-bleedy? I'd call it. It may have been a "non-lethal" setting, as Mikhail says to Ben, but this is the guy who's been shot, microwaved, and harpooned, and still lived to blow up Charlie, so I'm not sure that "non-lethal" means the same to Mikhail as it would to say, any of us.

Richard doesn't age. We haven't seen any other people who don't age. I'd say that sets him a little bit apart from the other Others. Ben knew this when he made the birthday remark to him.

I find the remark "our agreement keeps us out" very interesting. MB, weren't you saying in another thread that there had to be some rapport between the two camps, Dharma and Hostiles, in order to set up the agreement in the first place? That could fit into this.
 ;)

I think it has settings ranging from "deafening cacophony" to "ooh! you could microwave a Hot Pocket on that". So, earplugs appear to work at the lower level; but it would probably melt your earplugs at the higher level.

Yes, something must have happened to make the "Hostiles" accept the DI onto their island. I mean, the U.S. Military set up there, and they got cut down. Richard said they gave them the option to leave peacefully, and when they didn't, they killed all of them. Looks like the DI is setting up for the long run, and yet the Hostiles let them stay. There's one friend of mine I always argue with, and after hours and hours, we realize that we were both arguing for the same thing, but using different words/metaphors, so thought the other was trying to argue, and it's a big mess. I thought that was what was happening here, so I bust out my mad diplomacy skillz.

Besides, we're all here for the same purpose. For love of Lost, and to gain understanding through discourse. And sometimes to post things in threads like "In Bed" and Unofficial fan sites of various actors/actresses.   ::)

Never has a show made so many people so wrong on so many fronts.  It's almost like if you don't really reach on a theory, you're probably going to be wrong. :D

Oh. I only do a cursory search on my facts before posting. Even when you're 100% right, people will shout you down as being wrong!!! So, I always post the first thing that pops into my head. Sometimes I don't even believe my own theories. lol
I hear that.  I've made a few posts where I state my theory... then disprove it before I finish the post.

Well the sonic fences practically fried Mikhail when he was pushed into it (although it apparently didn't kill him) - so Richard may have been fibbing.

It may well be that the sonic fences don't affect Richard. We already know that he's different to the other Others, due to Ben remarking that he doesn't have birthdays.

i can see ur point.. as flawed as it is but good try... well when Mikhail went through the fence it was set on a non lethal setting... but back then in the DI hay day i think theyd always have it on high level especially at night. also ben never remarked to richard or anyone that they didnt have birthdays... what Ben said in the episode "Man behind the curtain" was " RICHARD: Whats that?.... BEN:  "It was a birthday girft, and today just so happens to be mine. you do remember birthdays dont you richard." implies that he once had birthdays but since he is so allegedly old that he doesnt celebrate them anymore.

even your retort is flawed... yes there was  smoke and blood and foam coming out of every hole in his head... but he saod to ben ... it was set on a non lethal setting...  and when you just said you know to what i said... that contradicts what you just said... im not trying to start fights or bad blood here.. just trying to inform the less informed with my vast knowlege of LOST... dont worry youll understand it someeday.

Man, thems fightin' words where I comes from. You gonna to take that Mango?? He just called you a B!%@H in front of all of us!!

I'm taking all bets people. LOL

It's difficult with this show.  You can make a statement and support it with 10 facts presented during the life of the show.  But, it's that 11th thing that you forgot that kills it all.

The threads were merged, causing much confusion. So people coming to the What Richard Said About the Fence thread were treated to a bonus of the Sonic fence thread as well....hence, confusion! But no worries. Every time a thread gets merged, an angel gets its wings... dang it's late for me.

Yep.  Mango just seems to be too nice a guy.  There's gotta be someone around here who is more easily provoked.  It has to be an easy one though... don't want it to appear like we're the problem.

Obviously the others have fond a way through it.
They probably figured the code which is how juliet knew it in season 3

Or the Others infiltrated the D.I. with spies.
