I was wondering who Colonel Kurtz was when Sawyer called Locke that...

Brando in Apocalypse Now.

Kurtz was insane, wasn't he? It's been about 20 years since I saw it last... and there was drinking involved... I remember I liked it, but very few of the details.

Thanks.  I take absolutely no credit for it.

Apocalypse Now is based on Heart of Darkness, which is one of the books seen on Lost.  The book is different from the film, but the basic themes are still there.

In the book Kurtz is supposed to be this refined humanitarian that represents the best of the "civilized" world.  While in the Congo he slips into insanity and becomes more savage than the African "savages".

The story is about his slide into maddness and the savagery of our "civilized" nations as we take advantage of the "uncivilized" people for profit.

It was also sort of a funny call-back to season one...

"One minute you're happy-go-lucky, good-time Hurley, and the next you're Colonel bloody Kurtz!"
-Charlie to Hurley, Numbers

I knew using that as an e-mail sig for almost three years would come in handy!   :D

Wow.  I had no idea the reference had already been used.  It rings a bell now, though.

I'm surprised someone hasn't called Locke Colonel Klink.
