Title: Where are Rose and Bernard?
Post by: MrGermsChoice on March 29, 2007, 01:25:31 PM
Noticed allusion to it in the article on the podcast (how Boone would help Nikki and not Rose, or something)- did these two leave the show or something?  Are we to draw something from their not even being given a token appearance in weeks?

They were at least mentioned as Boone was looking for a pen to save Rose, which means the're still on the Island. I would love to see them again but I think the producers have said its a mere casting issue.

Wait, where was this said?  Does this mean they're no longer with the show or something?

Where are Rose and Bernard?  Why they're on the beach, doing laundry, having romantic dates on the beach, and just being generally happy that they are alive and together.  Sort of like the 40 or so other survivors we never see.

I agree, I think this is just a casting issue.  If you remember, Rose disappeared during the middle of the first season because she was doing a broadway play in New York.

What does "mere casting issue" mean?

They've never been regulars on the show.  They are just contracted when needed for the number of episodes they need them.  So if they have other projects, then there are casting issues and they can't be on lost.

But those "40 or so other survivors we never see" were never given storylines or backstories, nor did the writers ask the audience to invest some emotion and thought/concern into them. Demoting them to extra status doesn't sit well with me on several levels.

You can't have every episode feature every character. There is so much going on in the other plots that it would be too confusing to spend 6 minutes on Jack in otherville, 5 minutes on Charlie and Claire, 4 minutes on Sun and Jin, etc. The story lines would really take forever to get through, or worse, they'd never get as intricate as they are now. They have a main cast and a secondary cast, and obligating those secondary actors to stay in Hawaii, to limit there ability to make money on other projects, just so you can see them walk by on the beach or say hi to Hurley at the kitchen, isnt fair to them. At some point they will write them a story, fly them in, shoot that epi and maybe some scenes for another one, and then let them go home.

That's why scenes are shot well in advance. Need Rose and Bernard to have a few scenes with Hurley in one episode, while having them make a few comments about Nikki and Paulo in another episode 3 months later? Shoot both scenes in the same week, then send the actors on their way to do their own things. Simple.

They dont have the whole season written out before the show starts filming. This show was probably being written while we were watching the mini season in the fall. I had a friend who interviewed to write for a TV show, and he spent a week with the writers to see how it's done. They may only have 4 or 5 epis ready to shoot before filming starts, and often they're writing each episode only weeks before that same epi is shot. They may not know when they have the actors available what the heck they'll be filming in 3 months.

Rose was briefly seen during last night's epi.

This will depend on what type of show it is...for instance, a sitcom can be written on the fly easier than something as convoluted as Lost, since storylines don't have to fit together perfectly to form an overall cohesive whole. Episodes can exist independent of each other. Unless the speculation that the writers on Lost really ARE making it up as they go is correct lol...in which case it would explain the apparent numerous logic flaws that seem to exist. Either way, it does not take a momentuous amount of preplanning and organization to film scenes ahead of time on a series like this. Having Bernard and Rose not appear at all this season was not an unavoidable obstacle.

It was probably just a judgement call. Maybe they felt other stories warranted more time and development. Maybe they have a big plan to spin off a new show called "Rose and Bernard." Maybe the Bernard/Rose stories didnt test as well or had lower ratings. Maybe the actors are busy in other projects. Ultimately, what difference does it make?

Btw, on the topic of whether or not the writers/creators of Lost are thinking well in advance or doing it all on the fly, They screwed up with Sawyer big time concerning his looks right after the crash. In the pilot episode, they have him with MUCH shorter hair and no facial stubble after the plane crashes...yet in flashbacks they show him with VERY long hair and a face full of stubble mere hours before boarding the plane. Now unless Sawyer got a complimentary shave and haircut in midflight by one of the flight attendants, that's a very noticeable screw up lol. And in last nights episode, they "flashback" to right after the crash again...and Sawyer's hair is NOW long and pulled back in a quasi-ponytail lol.

Preplanning eliminates things like that, because they can film Sawyer's flashbacks around the same time they're filming the first few episodes. It doesn't appear as if they thought ahead like that, though...which points, to me anyway, that they didn't think ahead concerning Rose and Bernard (or Walt for that matter).

The main difference that it makes is in the continuity of the show and the people we're asked to pay attention to and invest time and interest in. I mean, just look on this site...threads and posts are dedicated to things like "Where's Rose? Where's Bernard?"...Hell, even "Where's Vincent?". Why? Because once you introduce a character and give them even the slightest significance, the audience intuitively assumes there's a reason. Howeve, when we are later asked to just forget about them and there seems to be NO reason, it doesn't compute, doesn't sit right.

The writers should be flattered that so many fans wonder about and care about even the more secondary and less relevant characters. I'm pretty sure they would not tell us to take a "who cares" attitude.

WhatThe,

What do you want to see from the Rose and Bernard story? What do you think they can add? I'm not understanding the passion to see them return...

As far as shooting the flashbacks from the beginning, in a perfect world, I am sure they would have done that, but in reality, they are dealing with actors that can be egotistic, venues that can change, and other venues that won't allow for a perfect plan to take place...

See Eko... he had contract issues, but the writers would have loved to have him around as he was a valued character. But it doesn't always work out.

Enjoy the fantasy of the show, and don't concentrate so much of minor visual details... it will take away from it.

I think that if you think ANY show out there is filming scenes one or even two years appart, then you're crazy.  The lost producers do have a "plan" for this show.  That means that they sat down and planned out the overall story arc.  And they probably planned out some of the characters stories as well, but not all of them.  As they shoot new episodes they are forever evolving and tweaking this storyline.  They don't necessarily know everything they're going to do with every character until they do it.  But I don't think ANY show knows that, and I think it would be bad if they did.  Perfect example is Libby.  They said they always planned to kill Ana Lucia, but they didn't expect fans to hate her so much.  when they realized that they felt that to get the emotional response they wanted from the death, they had to kill another character.  So they killed Libby off too. Even though they hadn't completed her whole backstory.  They realized they could tell the rest of her story through other character's flashbacks.  So I agree that the great thing about lost is the preplanning, but I also think the great thing about lost is their ability to adapt to the things viewers are and aren't responding to quickly.  But still keeping the overall final outcome of the story (in their minds) unchanged.

I mean, I love Rose and Bernard, but I have no need to see them in the background.  There is much more I want to see right now and get pissed about not seeing.  ;)

But to each his own as well.

WhatThe,

What do you want to see from the Rose and Bernard story? What do you think they can add? I'm not understanding the passion to see them return...

They were warm, interesting characters who added a touch of real romance and love to the story...the Jack-Kate-Sawyer triangle has lost steam, seeing Hurley engulf Libby as they kissed was somewhat cringe-inducing, and both Charlie and Claire take turns being too irritating to care if they are together or if they split up. ARE they even together? Who knows, who cares.

Also, Rose had a connection with Locke in that she knew his "secret" and had been healed by the island as well...could have gone further into that story arc, delved a bit more into that aspect. She also shared that spiritual calmness that Locke and Ecko both shared. That's been sorely missed this season in my eyes.

Lastly, they would have been FAR more interesting to watch than Nikki and Paulo. Both were given more than enough screen time this season...why not have that screen time and those flashbacks/storylines developed for two people who are ALREADY known and well-liked?

I understand scheduling conflicts, but let's not act surprised when fans of this show start to wonder about past characters that were part of their initial love of the series to begin with. Nobody here should have a problem with any of us wishing they were still being included in the episodes.

A big AMEN to that!
I have no huge love of Rose and Bernard, but I'd rather watch them ANYDAY to Nikki and Paulo!  And at least R and B were good actors!

Nice post, WhatThe, well put. You'd think someone could at least mention Rose in Bernard in passing (like "...so I was talking to Rose and Bernard and Neil the Frogurt guy this morning, and...").  At least Vincent has been making an occasional appearance. If they write him out of the show too, then I'll really be mad!

I think Rose and Bernard are gone because they are not important anymore.  They are content to stay on the Island because Rose is healthy there.  No more decisions to be made.

I think that Rose and Bernard were there to point out to people that there are places in the world where electromagnetic forces are high and that are rumored to have healing powers.  Their flashbacks were all building up to their trip to that Australian mountain, where Bernard thinks Rose can be healed but where the guy running the place says that this is not the place that will cure her.  There may be such a place, but Australia is not it.

So, from her backstory we get that (a) there are places at intersections of lay lines (lines of electromagnetic eneergy) that are rumored to heal people, and (b) not every place works for every person.  Foreshadowing to Ben's predicament, maybe?

I think their backstories were simply meant to explain that, and that task has been accomplished, and now they are gone.  Just like Paulo and Nikki.  The existed simply to tell a story and now that it's done they are gone.

Personally, I could still see some use for Rose and Bernard, but I never did see any use for throwing Nikki and Paolo in the mix. And now that they're gone, I still don't. Anything we may think we learned last night could still easily be excised back out of the story and plotlines and nobody would miss it.

I haven't a clue why they threw those two into the mix in the third season. They honestly didn't advance any storylines half as much as Rose did.

My theory about Rose and Bernard is simple.  They disappear to the caves where they make wild passionate love to each other.  Or they head to one of the empty hatches and have a few glasses Dharma wine, whiskey or whatever, smoke a few cigs and chilax!

Rose and Bernard can be sleeper characters!  Sorry but I keep thinking of the Stand and the characters there and how some were pivotal in the overall story while others were just brought along.

Who knows, but they were brought to Australia to help her cancer! ???

Oh Lil! The Stand was such an awesome movie!!!!!!  And I know that JJ Abbrams (sp?) is a BIG fan of Stephen King!

Thats funny to me because Bernard is in The Stand. I was watching the end of it a few months ago and saw him. So if he was in it earlier then he would qualify as one of the characters that come along in the movie. He ends up in Vegas so I guess he went with that particular crowd.

Very good point Cayley he was!  He went to the dark side!
And in the book there was an Elise and Ralph (I dated a guy named Ralph)  both were on the good side, but this is not relevant to anything.  Nevermind ::)

I've started rewatching LOST season 1 and it is amazing how many things I never caught before and am more aware of now.  I hate to say this, but I sort of forgot all about Charlie!  It is weird seeing some of the people who are no longer with us: Charlie, Shannon, Boone....and yeah.  What the heck happened to Rose???   She was such a sweet lady and heck she was right there across the aisle from Jack when the plane crashed.  I guess they're still in current times wandering what happened to everybody else.

I was thinking of them the other night.  I am wondering if they end up with the others and Bernard is their dentist and Rose is their high priestess :-[

A house by the beach, with the dog, tea and each other.  If this is the ending for them then it is a good one.  They took the right road and found peace and comfort in the days they may have left!  Good for them ;D

I think they finally found their paradise and have realized that no matter what happens, as long as they are together, they are happy.  So now...did island go boom boom?  Or just one big FAAAHH-LAAAASSHHH forward.
