Episode 2x23 / Re: Why no black lights in fake lock downs
« on: May 31, 2006, 02:33:03 AM »
In graduate school, we used ultraviolet light prior to doing a tissue culture in order to kill any micro-organisms. Thus our tissue cultures would be sterile and would not be contaminated with foreign microbiota. I wonder if the black light is actually UV light used to decontaminate the Swan Station during lockdowns..... HMMMMMM.

Find the quiz pandora added and see what happens. Questions were obvious where thye were headed but I'll admt I was shockedand flattered to be kate.

Well. Self-judging my own personality traits, I came up with Sawyer. The quiz also came up with Sawyer. Physically I'm kinda like Sawyer only more muscular and with curly hair. So I guess I'm Sawyer  :D

Could be - did you notice that when our lot were shot with the darts, they shook like they were being given an electrical shock of some sort. Maybe these devices are the controls?

Great Idea! Blows the whole neurotoxin idea up.

Theories & Speculation / Re: Social Engineering

I like your line(S) of thinking pandora. I'm currently in Austin, TX at a conference, so I haven't had much time to read posts and think about this. When I get back to St Louis I will ponder this further. The EM stuff is interesting. I'm a physiologist and have been trying to construct models of what is going on here in the area of hallucination/psychic phenomena/whatever juwannacallitmain.... For the most part I have been focusing on the REAL and the PLAUSIBLE. THis is only because I read a JJ Abrams interview in which he stated that all of what happens on lost can be explained by current science. He seemed to shy away from the twilight zone stuff. I need to do some more reading, but thanks for the synaptic stimulation  ;D

Paranormal psychic events. Well, we'll find out this season if I am correct or not I guess. Since the human brain is basically an electro-chemical machine. One could easily make a connection between the EM on the island and hallucinations/paranormal events. If we see any more paranormal events in season 3 this hypothesis is shot.  ::)

so this is possible?? i wondered if it was but didnt think so.......now i feel better that it is

can anyone make any connections with any paranormal psychic events happening as the timer gets lower?? if what kelvin said was true and entering the numbers releases built up EM, then wouldnt the events be more likely to take place as the clock runs down?

good post!!

Hypothetically possible. MRI machines basically take pictures of your body by realigning the atoms within your body using an externally generated electromagnetic field. I'm not aware of anyone hallucinating while having an MRI, but if the field were stronger it could afffect charge distribution across the membranes of excitable cells (like neurons) and change their normal patterns of activity. This MAY result in hallucinations. It's all hypothetical though.

Liked your Utopia post. I hadn't read it before until you mentioned it. Kinda fits some of what I've been thinking.

815 survivors...... hmmmmm. Well. Locke seems to think that they are there for a purpose. I find it interesting that we have a Jon Locke and a Danielle Rousseau. Both of whom are famous contractarians who influenced our founding fathers. One line may be that their purpose is to resolve the "split". It certainly fits in with utopianism and liberalism methinks. Personally, this is one area that I haven't spent much time with... WHY they are there. I now know how (Which is what I thought after I first saw Jack's key pulled towards the wall in the Hatch), but Why is eluding me right now. Sheer Speculation = Since they all seem to be interconnected, maybe it was a setup and they ARE all there for a reason. When I have something better, I'll be sure to post it. Right now I keep coming back to Jung and Synchronicity..... patterns of connections that cannot be explained by direct causality......

As much as I love Occam's Razor, I must be a bit less logical on this front. I am still of the mind that this island once was the home of an advanced civilization (Atlantis, Lemuria, Thule, whatever) and something is still there that can affect its human inhabitants. It seems to occur during times of stress, which would support this to some degree. Again, I'm something of a newbie here. I started watching with episode 17 this year [I used to watch Criminal Minds, but it's gone downhill so I switched]. When the first season DVD came out, I watched all of those. I still haven't seen all of this season's episodes though. After seeing them all I should have a better handle on this mehopes  ;)

Episode 2x23 / Re: "The Other's" Sleeping Darts.

Right-O Pandora.

Several natural toxins available on an Island I'm sure. Curare comes from plants like Strychnos toxifera. Mushrooms give us Muscarine, Psilocybin, etc. Ouabain is a plant poison that can stop the heart in large enough doses. Atropine comes from nightshade... and on and on and on. Strichnine, Ricin, blahblahblah.......

My favorites are Saxitotoxin (which you may have heard of as RED TIDE... It comes from infected shellfish) and Tetrodotoxin (the neurotoxin found in Japanese pufferfish or Fugu). Both very deadly at miniscule concentrations.

Nature has lots of cool stuff  :o

Theories & Speculation / Social Engineering
« on: May 26, 2006, 05:46:00 PM »
Greetings. I have moslty been lurking for the past couple of months. After reading everyone's posts, I thought I would give you all my hypothesis of what is going on. So here goes (and feel free to poke away):

The "Others" or "Hostiles" are actually a utopian society set up on the island by the DeGroots. The DeGroots were influenced by the works of BF Skinner. Skinner was the developer of what is called Behaviourism in the Psychology realm. According to Skinner, all behavior can be modified by utilizing either positive or negative reinforcement. Skinner also believed in "operant conditioning" in order to get human beings to behave as you wish them to. Skinners book "Walden Two" describes how a Utopian society functions without modern conveniences. This society functions much better than the traditional societies that we are familiar with and is concerned mainly with the happiness of its members. "Operant Conditioning" is used to raise children, reinforcing good behaviours and conditioning against bad behaviours (Skinner did not believe in "punishment").

From Wikipedia: "It favors and encourages a lifestyle of minimal consumption, rich social relationships, personal happiness, satisfying work and leisure. The community is minimally consuming and minimally polluting, and it is egalitarian in the division of work. Its most controversial aspect is the communal raising of children and the educational system, which teaches patience and how to handle destructive emotions such as jealousy along with normal academic subjects."

Now, social engineering research does not "pay" very well. So at the same time that the DeGroot's social experimentation was going on, the Widmore EM project was also being done. The hatches and its populants were engaged in experimentation that was designed to advance human knowledge of EM (possibly for weapons use, medical use.... witness the miraculous "curative" properties of the island... I'm not real sure on this point just yet). Dharma may have been a project in which a Utopian society was created in order to function as a Research society.

During the "Incident", there was a split between the pure utopians (the "Others.... note how they only want the children and the "good" ones that are on "the list".... hmmmmm. Skinner is still at work here methinks) and the Dharma-ites (for lack of a better term). The Dharma-ites were isolated within their hatches and occasional food drops were done to keep them alive. The "others" lived off the land and established a utopian society based up Skinner and DeGroot's theories.

Well kids that's as far as I've gotten with this. Much more rumination required here. Whaddayathink?

Don't know the actor you are referring to, but this might help.

Anyway, I found this also and thought it was a bit amusing.

Ummm. The hatch door dropped after the Desmond-turn the key-flashy thing-possible explosion-purplish-failsafe-reverse polarity-hullabaloo thingy. Dusly and Derefore methinks it was the hatch door and not the door of some "satellite hatch". Mecouldsbewrongdo  ;)
