Wasn't the Egyptian sun god (?Ra?) identified with the Greco-Roman god Apollo?

When I first saw Jacob's tapestry with Greek writing, that's what came to mind.  A disk in the sky with wings and rays of light beaming down is the way the Egyptians depicted their sun god, right?  Then Jacob has two Apollo bars -- one for himself, and one that Jack chose (but the machine got stuck).

That's got to mean a ton.  Is Jack the one who's ultimately destined to be Jacob's discipline (i.e., leader of the Others)?  He hesitated during his surgery because he's the one who didn't really believe in himself (according to his dad).  Jacob said, "sometimes the machine just needs a little push".  Jack says at the Swan that carrying out this act is the first time he's ever felt completely sure he was doing the right thing.

I mean, it's not a stretch to say that Jack is the key to everything, but are these some specific clues that he's the ultimate ace in the hole for Jacob?

Well on the tapestry we see the sun (signified by the symbol for the god Ra (the eye of Ra)) giving out rays/helpful hands to all the people. Apollo is sort of like Ra he is the sun god and the god of truth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo

I'm not sure that this overly significant. for Jack. We have seen Apollo bars in Lost before. They are among the food in the Swan station's pantry room and Kate eats one in "Adrift" (S2E2).  Just found a list of other places they appeared on Lostpedia:
http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Apollo

Examples:
Boone offered one to Shannon, Rose saved one for Bernard, Edmund Burke is hit by a bus with an Apollo logo on the side,  an Apollo bar ad was on the soccer field in the TV game Desmond was watching, Annie gave one to Ben when they were kids, Hurley split a bar with Ben while waiting for Locke to emerge from Jacob's cabin.

That's a lot of Apollo bars!

Actually, the image of the sun disk extending rays ending with hands is most often associated with the Aten, the personal god of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. Akhenaten at least temporarily displaced the priests of the traditional gods and has been represented as an early monotheist (although recent scholars have called that into question). Whatever he was, Akhenaten was an important figure in New Kingdom history.

Since most things are significant on LOST, maybe the name of the candy bars is no accident!  Good theory.

I can guarantee you that the name of that candy bar is no accident.  TPTB have always said that names are given for a reason.

I agree the Apollo candy bar is very significant. It was also a big part of the Lost Experience ARG back in 2006. If any of you played along with Rachel Blake you know what I mean...

Then there is Horus, or the eye of Horus on the tapestry....that is an interesting one too.

I did not remember this particular episode of Star Trek, james, but I'm watching it now via 'hulu'.

I'm about 15 minutes into it, and yeah, it's freaking me out a little.

Wow.

I'm gonna watch the rest of it and I'll let you know what I think.

I grew up watching Star Trek in the 60's and haven't watched it in years, so this should be interesting!

That is a good old Star Trek, but check out "Shore Leave". It's more like Fantasy Island, or our little ISLAND.
