If Locke isn't dead dead, all of it won't make much sense, so for the sake of continuity and good storytelling, I hope they don't bring him back to life in season 6, as sad as that may be. However, there might still be a part of Locke in there (hence the memories), just like there might be a part of Christian in his cabin manifestation. Maybe when Anti-Jacob tries to hurt Locke's friends, the Locke side of him won't let him, or maybe there will be a struggle inside new Locke, like a double personality syndrome or something...

Yes, about those whispers. I had an image of how wind animates grass as it passes over it. what if Smokey/AJ can animate the dead on the island as he passes over them in a similar way?

I posted this somewhere else, but I figure this is a good place as well. I was thinking about the idea of Locke being dead, and it occurred to me. Richard said that he's never seen anyone come back to life on the island, and I was thinking, that doesn't mean it can't happen, just that he's never seen it. So maybe Locke will come back to life next season (some how). I have faith that the writers can do it and have it make sense.

Oh Lord I just thought of something while reading this. As mentioned before Locke had an encounter with Smokey very early on in season 1. Whos to say Smokey didn't kill him then and there and take over his body? Although, that would mean that we've only seen the real Locke for about 4 or 5 episodes lol. That would kinda suck.

Ok, I've started re-watching S1.
Maybe I'm looking at this with new eyes, knowing what we know now, but I'm starting to wonder if Locke died in the plane crash (815!) and has been possessed (or partially possessed) by Jacob or Nemesis since the beginning.
Just seemed odd to me that in White Rabbit when Jack was chasing his father around the island, that Locke was nowhere until Jack was hanging on to the cliff - then he suddenly appears and saves Jack.
He also knew where to look for the fresh water, he even said he'd 'know where to look' for it. (I think "Locke" led Jack to it), and he knew how to kill a boar.
This is a disabled guy who worked for a box company in a cube farm! How would he know how to kill a boar? Also noted that no one was around when he got that boar.
WTF??
Somebody talk me down!!

You know, I hate to say this because I love Locke, but really, what does he have left to be alive for? He didn't have any family, he worked for a flippin' box company, his one true love is now dead... he wanted to have a purpose, and apparently now that purpose has been revealed and/or fulfilled -- his purpose was to serve as the "substitute" or "vessel" or whatever you want to call it for this struggle on the island, whatever it is. I hate to think of this, but I don't think there will be a real, alive Locke at the end of the series... I think he's moved on and become something else, and we'll never see an "alive" Locke again... mrose, you're not wrong. It seems to me that there have been (at least) three distinctive Lockes -- Pre-Crash Locke (who was kind of pitiful and frustrated and angry and couldn't walk); After-Crash Locke who was The Great White Hunter but who still had more questions than answers; and Season Five Locke who is super-confident, supreme leader, and seems to know practically everything. It's definitely odd. TPTB did say that John Locke was the key to the whole series, I think...

Yes madam p! That's it!
The three 'Lockes' heh...
When he turned the wheel and was off-island again, he reverted to his pre-island self. He was supposed to convince the O6 to return to the island and failed miserably. To me, it didn't look like he tried very hard, and then he even tried to commit suicide.
I remember thinking 'what happened to the great white hunter'? Especially since he was on a mission of such grave importance!

Seemed to me that Locke returned to his old self because he was being pushed around in the wheelchair. But yeah, I agree.

This is kind of arguing against myself, but I posted this somewhere else and it still holds true, I think... If "Real Locke"'s body really is "dead-dead," then (pardon the grossness) why isn't it all stinky by now? I mean, it's been a good while, at least a week or more, right? And even if it was embalmed, it was only refrigerated for that one night in the meat locker I think, and they ARE in a tropical jungle carrying it around in a box. Seriously, it should be in far worse shape, I think... Soooo, I'm thinking there is still something really weird going on with that dead body. I think I just negated my earlier argument...

Locke has been frustrated and confused on the island too, from time to time. I like the idea that maybe he was always a bit of someone else. Maybe he's been slightly posessed by the Smoke monster. When he looked at Smokey that once, he was posessed by it. Then, later, Smokey tries to pull Locke down a hole. I think that's when he tried the full posession. But it didn't work. Jack saved him.
Anyway, I feel like I've been thinking about this for so long now that it's just a jumbled mess in my head. I might not be making any sense.
I LOVE the idea that wind over the places where the dead once lay is what's making the voices! Cool theory!

If he is embalmed, that would make a big difference. Sure at some point he would start to rot and smell, and become all sorts of lovely colors, and leak such delightful fluids, BUT it would take longer than the week or so they have been back on the island.

You bring up a good point, Bob. In fact, I was thinking the same thing. Bodies start to smell after a very short while...and yeah decomposition starts to happen...so.... well. Ew.

Plus there was the thing about the "five-o-clock shadow" that Locke's coffin-body had, when Jack was putting the shoes on it. Remember those debates? I suppose it could've been just a bad make-up day for Terry O'Quinn, but...
Did Locke-in-a-box (LOL) in The Incident have the five-o-clock shadow?
I'm still thinking there's something up with that body...

Did anyone else think of the Ark of the Covenant as the people were carrying the box around the island?
