Hey, this is my first post in the forums, but i've being reading them for a long time, hope you like my theories...

After thinking a lot about Ben and his way of summoning the Monster, i came to this conclusion...

What if water is what maintain the Monster “capture”, what if water is the Monster’s  weakness? I think that’s one of it’s weakness because it is composed by electricity (among other things, like volcano dust, etc) and if it cames in contact with water it’s has an electrical overload.

-That’s why on the Pilot the Monster disappears when it starts to rain.
-That’s why the Monster can’t leave the island.
-I think Ben knows about the Monster’s weakness and use them to control it. I think that his secret room leads (by tunnels) to were the Monster rest. So by taking the plug, Ben causes the water to go where the Monster rest and oblige him to leave that place, hence “summoning” it.
-I also believe that the Temple is where the Monster is and behind the Temple Wall, the Temple is surrounded by water. But somehow an unknown event to us (maybe the volcano erupting) create tunnels under the Temple and allows the Monster to leave it. That’s why Richard takes Ben to the Temple to cure him, the Monster will judge him and decide whether to kill him or not.

I also believe that the Monster has been mutating and was not always the same. I think that first it was brought to the island by an ancient cult/religion (maybe egyptian slaves from the Black Rock?) and it was just a metaphysical/spiritual entity with the power to read someone mind and judge them for their past actions, and take the form of buried dead people. I also believe this ancient people construct the Temple to have it controlled.
Then the volcano erupts creating tunnels under the Temple and leaving volcano dust there, which the Monster latter incorporate the it’s composition.
Then, maybe after the Incident, a lot of electromagnetic energy is release and electricity and electromagnetism becomes part of the Monster too, maybe because of the electromagnetic properties of the dust itself.
And those events create the Monster as we know it now and probably make him very angry towards new people on the island. Since the native worshipped him and the new people (D.I.) cause an Incident. Hence, becoming a defense mechanism to protect the island by allowing to live in it only “good people”.

I think you are right that he is afraid of water. In the first season it didn't came to the beach.
I think it always had he smokeform, because of the picture of Anubis and the monster
that Ben finds under the temple.

Where are you from if English is not your motherlanguage?

Good thinking. Yes, you might be on to something, I can't remember a time when smokey was around water. Also, the scene in the pilot when it rained was one of the very rare (maybe the only time?) that it rained during a scene on the island. Maybe that was a clue for us we didn't pick up on!

The water theory fails when we all remember that in season 3 during a rainstorm the monster was chasing Kate and Juliette (who were cuffed to each other after being "smoked" by the rest of the hostiles).
