My local carrier is a bit shoddy...I'm always getting my neighbor's mail, and sometimes mail from the next street over (which doesn't make sense). My theory is that the carrier doesn't want to make an extra stop at the next mailbox (it is a drive-by person...which is weird since I'm in planned neighborhood, mailbox after mailbox at regular intervals, you would think they would walk)...what do you think?

no offense, but you sound just like every body who complains at work when they clearly have no idea about the job. most of my route is planned neighborhoods, box after box as you say, but you don't realize how many deliveries we have, I have about 650 boxes on my route, so there is no way in hell I would walk that, it would take all day.
plus most of these "planned neighborhoods" have the exact same numbers on every different street, so it is very easy to get them mixed up when trying to case the mail in the morning, and plus accidents happen, my advice to you is the next time it happens, just put it back in the box and put your flag up, they will see it and make a note of it in their head (at least that is what I do), so when they come across it again it will stick out in their mind, or go talk to the person the next time you see them. If you complain it usually just pisses them off, and they just assume you are another one of the annoying yahoos who always think crazy.
sorry for the rant, but you struck a nerve.

I guess I struck an unpleasant nerve! No, thanks for the advice...I usually just take the mail to the neighbor (since I am easy going and not too put out ) I grew up in a small town...the carrier always drove to a spot, walked a bit, then drove to another spot; guess I was just used to that and thought this person was being lazy, when clearly I don't have a clue! I haven't even talked with him before, and we have been here almost two years...he once asked my husband if we are Chechnyan though...we weren't quite sure how to take that.

The ones who park and walk are called City Carriers, they wear the uniform and their routes stay with in the main city limits, I on the other hand am a Rural Carrier, we only drive, and our routes are on the outskirts of town and out into the boonies, we don't have to wear a uniform because we aren't walking into like businesses all day.
The two types are totally different, we get paid differently, we have different unions different rules of conduct.
If you just take the mail to the neighbor, the carrier will never learn, I'm telling you, just put it back in the box and put up they flag, we are creatures of habit, and the only way to break it is to put a wrench in it.
I still stand by the fact that most planned communities were very poorly thought out when it comes to the addresses.
and I am sorry for blurting on you like that, It's just that most people just really don't understand my job, and have all of these assumptions about it and complain and act snotty based on those assumptions. For example, if there is a car parked in front of your mailbox, I will skip your box, not because I am to lazy to get out, or am being spiteful, it is because I am not allowed to. If I get out, and get bitten by a dog, get hit by a car, fall down and break my leg, it is MY fault, because I was not supposed to get out of my vehicle, the only time I am allowed to get out is when I have a package that won't fit in the box, or something that needs to be signed for, that is it. Now I am nice about it, I will honk my horn to see if someone comes out to get the mail, but if not, I just drive on by. It is also in out terms of service that YOU have to keep the area in front of your mailbox clear 30 feet in either direction or we can skip your house, now I'm not a stickler for that, as long as I can get up to and away from it in the truck, I always deliver.

In Boston, our mail carrier is Armando, and we bake him cookies every Christmas. Except last year, he and his wife went to Hawaii for two weeks. So we gave him cookies when they got back. But we live in the center of town, and although he drives around, he has to walk up to deliver the mail to our door. I'm glad you're explaining stuff like this, but it makes me sad to talk about work. So here is something that grizn0 posted in the Renaissance Fair thread, thought it might cheer you up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuNxHqwazs

I have the meanest mailman ever....I'm always nice to him---but he always glares at me and says rude stuff. He is always here by 3:00PM every single day...and one time when I was driving home, I saw him pulling up to our box at 6:30PM...and I drove up to get my mail. I smiled and said "You're here later today"...without the slightest hint of anything negative...and he glared at me and said "Uh, no." I just got this injured puppy look and got my mail and left. The next run-in was when I was checking the mail often, ((waiting for my Harry Potter books to come))...and he knew that I had been looking for my package all week. I was really nice when I saw him sitting in his mail truck and said "Any packages today?"...and he responded with the same attitude as before, and said "I don't know, you have to wait." So, I just stood there all awkward, waiting for him to glance in the back. I waited for about 5 minutes when he finally turned his head around and reached behind him to give me my package. I still was polite and said thank you...but he just ignored me.

wow, now that guy sounds like an a-hole, I almost understood why he was acting that way, like when I'm having a really bad day and I am out on the route at like 6:30, after the 15th person says "hey, you're late today" you do kind of want to punch them, or when it's a 100 degrees and the 15th person says "hot enough for you?" even if they are trying to give me a glass of water, you kinda don't wanna hear it and be left alone, but I've never been (at least I don't think) rude like that to anyone, I'm usually polite, especially to the people who drive me the most crazy.
I enjoy the fact that I don't have to talk to anyone for the vast majority of my day at work, and when I see people standing outside waiting for me, it only really annoys me because I have to pause my ipod, so they can engage me in some kind of inane small talk, when they are really just going through the motions to get their mail from me.
the hairy potter people are pretty crazy though, and I'm willing to bet (I assume you got it on the day it came out from amazon) that he, like me, had to deliver about 50 of those stupid books.

Actually, I got the first four of them from Ebay really cheap a few months ago because I never understood the hype about them...after so many years of people telling me "Read the Harry Potter series"...I finally decided to buy them. I'm not a HP fanatic. Good guess though.... And...I'm probably one of the most non-theatening, least-annoying people he could come into contact with....I'm so used to people treating me nice that it bothers me when someone doesn't. He's just a grouchy old man picking on a girl.

well, I can tell you that we don't like it when people are standing there staring, we almost always prefer that we don't have to talk to you at all, but (this is where he and I would differ) I make exceptions for the cute girls, and people who receive things that I myself am in to. Like there is this guy on my route who keeps getting packages from one of my favorite record companies, and I keep looking for him to be outside so I can talk to him about music, it's never the one's you want to be outside, it's always the crazy ladies who think the kids are stealing their mail. Listen grandma, no one wants your plow and hearth catalogs!
sorry, I slipped into a trance there.
