Why are we assuming the pod in the Orchid was for teleportation?? Didn't Ben say in the finale that it was for time travel?? And Dr. Chang said it in the season opener. Just curious where the info on teleportation is coming from.

Mrs. Hawking had mentioned that there were pockets of the electromagnetism (or what have you) that are connected to others. Perhaps Widmore used the fortune he had amassed to find these pockets, but did not know which one was the exit. Now, Ben uses the FDW to leave the island, and shows up at a hotel in Tunisia and tells the desk clerk his name, to which she reacts strangely. Now, if you've been willing to take this little trip with me, just imagine that next to his name (Dean Moriarty) in the register, there is a little note that says "Contact Widmore industries" or something else to that effect. So she does, and now Widmore knows that the pocket of magnetic energy in Tunisia is most likely the exit ffrom the island, and then sets his cameras up.
It could be possible that you could travel to and from any of these pockets from any other pocket. Remember when Bernard took Rose to that healer in Australia he said the same thing; that there were pockets of unique electromagnetic energy all over the world. He also even says "like the one you are standing over right now." Kind of like the whirlpools in Zelda: The Windwaker.

I don't know that story, Griz, but yes, that is what is operating here. Many pockets of this kind of power on the globe.

I see what you're saying, but look at what it takes to get from the island to Tunisia. There is some serious stuff going on there, and I just can't accept that there is a "simple" way to use these pockets. That will be the shark jumping moment for me if people just start transporting themselves all over the planet.

They won't, that's not the story. But the potential is there. And you're right, Bob. Nothing is simple about traveling this way.

If it were possible to just jump all around the world, then the show would have indeed hit the jump point for me as well.

The polarbear in Tunesia. It didn't use the wheel, because the only way to use the wheel for Ben was to destroy the pod and the well was closed. So, I think they did experiments with timetravel with the pod and the polarbear traveled through time, but showed up in Tunesia.

That will be the shark jumping moment for me if people just start transporting themselves all over the planet. I personally definitely wouldn't feel that would be a moment of shark jumping, its a feasible use of the islands power wouldn't you say? We know that this miracle energy has power and this is what Dharma tried to control when they came to island as Chang says in the first episode of this season. I could excuse it by thinking the following; What we have on the island is a natural source of let's say miracle energy. Before Dharma took over, I can see the ancient civilization that inhabited the island lived along side this miracle energy in its habitat. Perhaps Smokey was able to use his power to protect his domain. Much like a dog would in his backyard "you can play but as long as you respect if you don't I'll use my power to protect the island" was possibly an unwritten rule of the island communicated by Jacob. (Jacob - possibly the first Locke of his time). Maybe the ancient civilisations FDW broke was another means of controlling the power. To me the carving on the wall above Smokey's grate depicts the history. It shows Smokey, the natural source, in its home with the leader of the ancient civilisation that discovered the island. (the scene could quite possibly be the king of the civilisation being "scanned" by Smokey! has this been suggested already?) Back to the point, Dharma are very intelligent scientists and worked very hard to develop a system that could control the power, creating a "simple and easy to use room for teleportation". just one of the miracles that this energy can produce. sounds funny but its very thought provoking. So if the theory of the pockets was correct and they do use them for teleportation then it may seem simple but the building blocks behind the process is probably too complex to even imagine. You seriously can't expect the producers to show us how time travelling or teleportation works but just assume that there are intelligent enough individuals in the world out there that even with the sniff of a hint could work their magic to control it. Dharma have done and the ancient civilization did so with the FDW. Which leads to what the war is maybe about - The problem is that having some else other than the island control its power is NOT what the island (perhaps Jacob) wanted and Dharma have experimented in the wrong environment. Nature is what makes the world spin and Dharma and the tried to control that. Now nature wants to gain back the control with the use of the one human that has true goodwill for nature (Locke). Please excuse the long post, I've forever read this forum but never really contributed any of my understanding - i love the way that lost is based on such incredible ideas that are fictional but could quite possibly be factual if you want to believe earth is an energy and power in its own right.

I thought the bears were brought by Dharma to do experiments. They lived in the hydracages. Do you think they lived on a tropical island?

We don't know exactly when the polar bears were brought there, or by whom. That's kind of my point. And to answer your second question, if they lived in the hydra cages, then yes, they obviously did live on a tropical island.

I agree with bob that the first experiment before they developed the pod for teleportation or time travel would have been on the FDW. Dharma discovered it and wondered what it did. I can imagine that they were reluctant to turn it for fear of it consequence. So as a test they made a poor polar do it lol So polar bears were taken from the polar regions.. brought to the island to turn the wheel and ended up in Tunisia. I wonder who the first individual to ever turn the wheel was and whether he wore a submarine uniform (tries to tie this post into the subject of this thread)
