I was so unbelievably glad that Penny and Des were not killed.  They are my favorite couple on this show.  When I watched Ben shoot Des I didn't see any blood or even a bullet hole when he fell.  Did anyone else actually see a bullet wound because I didn't think he got hit when I watched it.

I guess I'm the only cold-hearted bastard that wouldn't care and maybe even wants Desmond/Penny to end up tragically.  Maybe Penny is destined to die the same way Alex supposedly was.

It would really make me mad if Desmond died---especially when "this island is not finished with him yet"...that would be a really poor choice for the writers, I think.  Penny, on the other hand, as much as I like her--I was hoping she would die.  It made sense, it would have been a "holy crap" moment...and I like those.  I half-way agree with you, Maxor.

I watched this show again yesterday and I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

When Ben sees Penny with her son he is brought up short.  Most assume, and I agree, that his own mother/child issues give him pause.

But then Penny yells at the boy by name, twice.  What is Ben likely to make of the information that Penny and Des have named their child Charlie?  His first instinct could very well be that they named him after his grandfather, not our late beloved rock 'n roller.

We haven't seen the end of the encounter at the marina, but we have seen Ben apparently abjectly sorry for something he did to Des, asking Sun to apologize for him.  You never know when Ben is being genuine, but suppose he is in this instance?  Would he be that sad about shooting Des and not killing him?  Or could it be that after pulling himself out of the water he took further action against Penny, or, God forbid, Charlie.  There's no way he could hurt Widmore more deeply.

I truly hope I am wrong, but I will be watching future episodes with a good deal of worry for Des' family.

I don't think Widmore would be as wounded if Ben killed Charlie, not more than killing Penny.  Does Widmore even know about Charlie.  Even if he knows of young Charlies existence, I bet he's never actually met him.

That is what I fear as well. It just seemed odd that he would tell Sun and Locke to apologize to Desmond if they ever saw him again. It has an even more ominous tone since he was heading to be judged for letting his daughter die. If you are Ben Linus why would you apologize to someone who means so little to you and is so far away? Unless you put that person through the only kind of pain that hurts you.

But, then again, when he apologized to John for making his life a living hell, it did seem very sincere. And then he strangled him to death some time after.

Late in the thread but right along with all of you.  I was just certain both Penny and Charlie were goners.  I'm very interested to see how far this redemption of Ben Linus goes.

Yeah, I thought Penny had to die to get Desmond involved in the story again.

That would be the logical way to go, I would think....maybe Ben shooting at him will be enough to bring Desmond back...thinking he was trying to hurt him and his family.  That could be it.

Perhaps Des was saved by his trusty bottle of MacCutcheon stashed in his grocery bag.  I don't think I can handle it if Pen & Des don't get their happily ever after...

Also, regarding Ben being "scared" about Locke's seeming resurrection,  I don't think Ben is afraid of anything except losing the island or control. He can't stand the new super confident  ( and fine looking, I might add)  Locke.   I don't think Ben  really planned on being  judged, I think he tries to manipulate the island just like he manipulates everyone and everything.  Maybe he was hoping that smokey would kill him, and the island would resurrect him, then he'd be on par with Locke.

i cant believe that all the people that love LOST all want the hallmark cookie cutter happy ending  as much as groundbreaking and unpredictable the show has been thus far... oohhh we are happy with Ben's redemtion,..... ooohhh we're happy that des and penny are alive....ooohhh golly gee im smitten with the theory that des might TEAM UP with Charles... wouldnt that be CUTE? BS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im upset that ben didnt slaughter penny and little charlie... im upset that des prolly wont murder charles and jsut be donw with it... and i am soooooooooooooo disappointed in the fact that Ben has grown a freaking Grinch heart... i keep telling myself this season is needed to fill in blanks that have been left, but time and time again THIS SEASON ALONE we have seen inconsistancies with ages and years and times... and now once Richard says so strongly that "once we do this he will ose all innocence and will forever be one of us" ... we now see Ben being innocent and careing for a child enough not kill his mother in front of him BEFORE Smokey judged him..... ??? c'mon i feel like we're being jerked around... unless there is a REALLY GOOD explaination for all of this mess by the end of the season... i might lose hope and officiallly personally call this show... shark jumped.... and for the record ive claimed this show WOULD NEVER JUMP THE SHARK... im disappointed, but willing to wait it out... i want darkness and the evil to overcome.. there has been so many happy endings its making me sick...

I think Locke is on the dark side now, because Smokey trapped Jacob and Christian is not speaking for Jacob,
but for Smokey and the monster scared Ben to death and now he will follow Locke.
That's why Widmore needed Locke on the island to win the war.
But I have too much fantasy and like you I don't like they lived happily ever after.

BR-
1. Breathe.  ;)

I love how passionate you get...that's how I feel a lot of the time about some posts I read on here.  I think a lot of people have just grown attached to Penny and Des.  I think it would be a great part of the plot line for Penny to die.  I said before that killing off Des would piss off a lot of people (including myself), not just because he is likable, but because he has been made out to be one of the most important people on the show.  Killing him would just leave a bunch of loose ends.

I don't feel like LOST is or will even jump the shark.  We have to remember that even though there can be excellent writing, and good intentions...sometimes real life stuff happens that can mess things up.  I wouldn't peg every 'mess up' as a problem with the show.  We don't know what really happened when it came to Charlotte's character...maybe she really did have a diva moment about her age.  We just don't know.  I also think it is unrealistic to expect everything to go off without a hitch--tptb, brilliant as they are, are still human..and we can't condemn them for an flub up here and there.

Keep an open mind, k?  You are one of my favorite posters on here, and I don't want you losing faith in LOST.   :-*
