I think Said is too compassionate to kill a child. Instead, I think he will try to befriend Ben and this change him. Sayid never heard from Daniel that he can't change events, and will unintentionally actually forward Ben's agenda. I think Ben did know about the Losties and remember them, and knew Sajid. Hence his creepy looks.

My first thought as soon as we found out we were in 1977 was that the Losties would somehow get to Young Ben and so something to him. Maybe not kill him, because then would Older Ben just disappear? But, maybe they would get to him somehow, play some head games or something, or isolate him from everyone. Not sure what this would do to the future, or them reconciling everything they have to, but it would probably relieve a little stress.

Actually I think we finally understand why Ben is so angry when he drives Jack and Sun back to Eloise to come back to the island. Because in his memory he knows the terrible childhood the Losties gave to Ben. Ben would try to mate Sawyer and Kate together in the cage because Ben may see the secret relationship between LaFleur and Kate in 1977. Thus to get Juliet's love, he would put Kate with Sawyer. Also the con skills of Ben may even be taught by LaFleur.

I'm not sure that Sayid is above killing a child. We've seen his softer side (I mean he falls in love like every couple of months with women he doesn't even really know), but we've seen his hardened side too. It seems like everyone has skills that the island needs. Maybe Sayid's skill is that of a torturer/interrogator.
Especially when he knows everything that Ben will do. If Sayid really believes he's found his purpose for being in 1977...and he thinks that purpose is killing Ben...well, I think he'll do it. Or attempt to.
But like I said before, I'd rather someone just show Ben some love. And I don't think our Losties will make any attempt to teach Ben anything. Ben was a manipulative jerk. Sawyer knows this, so why would he teach Ben how to con?

You can learn through observation. Maybe Ben sees that LaFleur is acting strange around Jack and friends, and realizes something is wrong with that, and pieces it together.

So, not so much taught as "picked up on"? That's certainly possible. But I still think he'd need some basis for it. He didn't seem all that sneaky when he was a kid before he met Richard, maybe the Others really instructed him in the arts of intrigue, lol!

I thought he seemed creepy and sneaky as a kid in all the episodes. In faact, I remarked to my husband on the skill of the child playing Ben. Very creepy. His dad was no gem, but other people were kind to Ben, and many people take a bad childhood and use it to become good. I still think the past is set, and nothing the Losties do will change Ben. Otherwise, maybe Juliet or surely Hurley, who is the heart of the Losties, would do something kind to help Benling.

oh and how the heck is smokey gonna take them back... to the past? smokey can time travel? Well, we know that Christian can. He appeared to Locke at the bottom of the well after the flash that sealed it from above, so that would be "statue" time.
