I think danielle still has to be part of the story, the little part in the beginning of the season definitley wasn't enough, she has to be connected more..Is she more on the side of the Hositles or The Dharma..How can you live on the island that long and never be caught..Both sides had to know she was there, I mean for God sakes they had cameras..Why wasn't she considered a threat??

I think she survived the purge because she wasn't near anyone that got killed. Therefore, she wouldn't have been gassed.

I doubt it. Ben had a canister with him. If it were over the entire island, he wouldn't have to use a canister.

First time posting.
I think the gas was released all over the island. In the episode 4xo6 "the Other Woman" Faraday tells Kate they are trying to render the gas in the Tempest Station inert. I believe in the same episode Goodwin is telling Juliet that in the Tempest he needs to make sure not to make mistakes or he could release chemicals that could kill everyone on the island.
Ben used a canister because he so hated his father that he sort of wanted to "murder" him separate from the rest of the D.I.

The gas was not released all over the island. Like JB said, Ben would not of needed his little canister to kill his dad. Danielle explained that she stayed alive by staying away from everyone and minding her own business.

Can we then infer that the tempest was not used in the purge? did they use cannisters in the barracks for the purge? Cause what they are saying above makes sense, both goodwin and Farraday stated that the island could be wiped out from the tempest?

I think when Goodwin says it will kill everyone on the island, he doesn't mean that literally. Sort of like when you get so mad at someone, and you say, "I'm gonna kill you." You're obviously not really going to kill them. Plus, distributing that much gas all over the island isn't as simple as spraying a hairspray can into the air. You would need miles of pipe to be able to cover the whole place.
Not to mention that you would have to go all over the island to lay the pipe, and if there is some kind of truce with the others, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be too thrilled about letting them lay down a method of killing them.

I'm not so convinced. Just browsed Lostpedia and saw this: *Producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof confirmed on the March 10, 2008 Official Lost Podcast that the Tempest was on the blast door map. They also confirmed it was a chemical weapons facility and was what the Hostiles used to gas the DHARMA Initiative in the Purge. I'm sure we will see how it all went down (hope, hope) before the series ends. More interesting facts about the tempest Station here: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Tempest

The Tempest may be capable of gassing the entire island or even sections of it, but it may also have been the repository of individual gas cannisters like Ben used on his Dad. These could have been the only gas weapon used, which still would make the statements by TPTB correct.

why in the world would Dharma build a chemical weapons facility capable of killing everyone on the island ? I'm not questioning your discovery, I'm just saying it seems like an extremely wierd thing to do
