I don't fully understand this myself... but could they somehow have known in 2008 that they'd need a runway in 1977?? Is that what Sawyer and Kate were working on in Season 3?!?

EDIT:
I said '77
I meant '04
I can't think about all of this at once.

It is the same runway, because Kate and Sawyer were being held on the small island which is where the plane is.  However, the plane is in 2008, not 1977.

I get that, but there has to be a connection here. Sorry, its hard to convey thoughts when I don't even understand the subject matter to begin with...

They didn't need it in 1977. They needed it in 2007 which is three years after 2004. Ben told them to probably because Jacob told him. Or Christian did.

Correct timeline:
They were building a runway in 2004 for a plane that would land in 2008.

This was a big "Wooooo!" moment for me tonight.

I was going "They weren't kidding!  They really WERE building a runway!!!!   Sheeee...."

OK, so Ben knew where the funny boats were.  (Why can't I ever think of the name of them?  I want to say catamaran but that's not it...)  So, Ben must've known the plane would land, and thus gave the instruction to build a runway in 2004.  Right?  Clever of him.  He wanted to maximize his chances of survival.  Methinks Ben is doing more time-skipping than we've seen thus far...

How did Frank know the runway was there?  Did he ever mention seeing it from the helicopter?  Or do you reckon Ben told him somehow?  If they hadn't shown us the scenes tonight from right before the crash, I'd have sworn Ben wandered up to the cockpit after he left Jack alone to read Locke's note, and told Frank then...

Frank just got lucky. It's one of those heightened senses things, you think clearer if your life is on the line.

Lostpedia lists the Ajira crash landing as happening in January 2008.

It was a good opener. Maybe old ben in '77 tells his younger self to build the runway in '04.

A few possibilities but it seems that the runway was clearly there for a reason and someone tipped the Others off before 2004, that much is clear. I'm more inclined to think old Ben say young Ben and filled him in on a bunch of secrets to help him through his life, the runway being one of those secrets.

Old Ben is in 2008 with Sun and Lapidus and everyone else. He's not in 1977. At least not yet.

Right, but he seems to have a working idea on how to join the 70's crew.
