I was just searching for Anubis on google and I found something intersing as well.. (I searched for Anubis because of the pointed ears) They found a statue of Anubis in King Tuts tomban dthe desciption goes something like this...

Tutankhamun's Anubis, like so many others, bears many features characteristic of a dog: long muzzle, eyes with round pupils, five-toed forefeet and four-toed hind feet. But the tail, drooping down the side of the shrine, is long and straight; and club-shaped at the tip, more like the brush of a fox than the curved tail of a dog, which is normally carried in an upright position rather than low down like that of a jackal, wolf, or fox.

This is the site I found this on...  http://bleedingeyeballs.com/basenjiart/anubisdebate.htm

The only thing I see that doesn't fit is that the statue on the show doesn't have a tail...
You beat me to it. Smiley  Here's the picture.  While it's not the same form (upright & posessing human features as well), he definitely has 4-toes on the hind feet.

It's funny because other Egyptian gods on Wikipedia like Horus and Anubis use the exact same graphics besides the heads.  I can't tell if they're accurate depictions or just laziness by the artist.
Usually each god or goddess was distinctive in many well-developed characteristics, but sometimes just the "masks" were changed in Egyptian art.

As far as whose face it is....I think it's Anubis, & the face won't resemble any LOST character.  In all honesty, I doubt that we'll ever get back to the statue.  The writers may feel like they sufficiently resolved the mystery last night. Undecided

I heard that they will touch on the STatue this season, but we wont get any other good answers next season...

I borrowed this photo from my local radio station. Looks better then Anubis if you ask me. The statue is not holding a staff as most of the other Gods are always shown with.

Good call, this is the reason why I was leaning towards Set instead of Anubis, because of the shape of the head, but that makes a whole lot of sense.

Tawarat, the hippo-headed goddess, has lower and rounded ears.  You can clearly see on the pickture that the statue has upright, pointed ears.  More like Anubis.  I think most of the Egyptian animal-hybrid deities have the four toes.  Horus would have a falcon head, wouldnt he?

Not to get all defensive, but Anubis' ears stick way up above the top of his head. It may not be Tawaret, but I say it is deffinitly not Anubis.

I like the idea of the fertility theme, but the statue on the Island definitely looks male.  Also- we have no indication that there was a problem with pregnancies/deliveries before the DI, correct?  (My pet theory is that the problems were caused by the Purge itself.)

On Anubis's ears- he typically had the pointy shape of jackal's ears in early Egyptian art, but as time went on (beginning with the Middle Kingdom), his ears seem to have shortened. lol  The Greek & Roman adaptations of his depiction were more dog than jackal-like.

I'm still stickin' with Anubis. Wink

Here are 2 google image searches for Taweret and Anubis statues. Notice how Taweret is always shown with a head dress and both arms down holding what looks like 2 Ankhs. Anubis is almost always shown with with a staff in one hand, his ears are always high above his head and never has a head dress. As I said before, it might not be Taweret but it is definitely not Anubis.

It's probably neither. In fact, it probably is a person on the island, just having an image in the shape of an egyptian statue.

I still think it is Set or Seth, the ears and headdress are the problems with my guess though too.

It's probably going to turn out to be some totally "unseen-up-til-now" god/goddess, that was only inspired by Egyptian themes.   Maybe the god of Time or some such.

I read on a blog that it was Jar Jar Binks and I nearly spat my beer out. lol

Imagine if some ancient civilization got hold of a portable DVD player, all the Star Wars movies and some solar panels to power it... It'd be like Beneath The Planet Of The Apes where those mutants worship that nuclear bomb.

All hail Jar Jar. lol

What make the most sense is

Isis

Isis was a goddess in Ancient Egyptian religious beliefs, whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife, patron of nature and magic; friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, the downtrodden, as well as listening to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers.Isis is the Goddess of motherhood and fertility

I don't know about you but I think this pretty much covers every one.....

From Sun and Clare or Amy and Juliet....Motherhood

Slaves? Workman Linus...the Other troops....Dharma workman.....How about Mikey?

Sinners? Well come on they are all sinners

Downtrodden?  I will pick on (pun intended) Locke....because as much as he might be Achilles (indestructible) he is Job in the real world

Artisans....Charlie...how about Hurley

Wealthy...Rulers or Aristocrats....ahhh this one is tough  Wink

Maidens....To many to count

But for a Island in need of babies and fertility it would make the most sense
