Call me crazy, but didn't they show the fresh wound in the pilot episode? He sustained it in the crash.
Always knew it wasn't real.. He's popped up as some of my favorite roles in the TV series Millenium and the X-files movie without a scar :-)
Just thought of something else as I was typing this... In another thread I compare Locke and Jack to Cain and Abel from the Bible.. That being said, Cain was said to have an Identifiable mark! Perhaps a scar?? Food for thought.

yes, that is what we were saying. a few posts up is a pic of his fresh wound from the crash in the pilot. Now wondering why it has been there every episode. I only know about the Cain and able from the book East of Eden by John steinback. but wouldn't John be able? and not jack but Ben would be Cain? Because Cain killed his brother out of jealousy. Maybe Ben is marked now since he killed John. also, whomever turnes the wheel is cursed wander the earth. Ben?

I'm glad this conversation is going on. In my thinking they have no reason to keep showing a wound from the crash unless it is the version of the crash that is coming. I keep saying that! I am really excited to see this seemingly small thing pay off.
The lost eye or the threatened eye is such a great literary device. I know King Lear loses his peepers - but so did Neo - John Anderson in Matrix, so did Chief John Anderton in Philip Dick's Minority Report (a brilliant story). The hero who can't see his way.

Good post Mrs. H - the parallels between Ben/John and Cain/Abel make sense.

I had always assumed that it was a crash injury.
Other "eye" connections-
the glass eye found in the Arrow Patchy's (presumably the owner of said eye) missing eye the closeups of eyes featured as many scene openers the Swan mural painting had a one-eyed man the eye seen @ Jacob's cabin Locke's backgammon chip eyes in Claire's dream
More??

Weren't there things falling out off the luggage compartments above the passengers on the plane?
Perhaps someones duty free fell out and hit him in the head/eye or something else, he maybe banged his head/face on a seat back or a tray?
could be that simple,
It may have been shown i the crash,

squirt, I don't think we are trying to figure out HOW he got it, just why the producers have kept it there. That is what makes us think that it is significant in the storytelling of time. It will be there after the crash but not before. If we see him without it we'll know when in time Locke is. etc etc.

Yes, and it's the only injury that has taken this long to heal...when the blast door crushed his leg, he was walking again in like, two days or something. A ridiculously short amount of time. Then, of course, his spine was immediately fixed. So why does he still have the scar? Veddy interesting...

Well if your cut you will heal and a scar remaining is not a sign it is not healing the scar is the healed wound, he also has a hole in his gut from a bullet, which is now most likely a scar, and he would have a scar on his leg from the blast door, while healed (and I agree healed quickly) it is not suspect just because of the fact the scar is still there.

Its a scar, I would find it strange if it was in the pilot and not in subsequent episodes, It may have some biblical signifigance, I dont know, (not religious) but I think it is more the fact that is healed wound. I dont think it took excessively long to heal, if some are referring to the fact that the scar is still there as the "its taking a while to heal" well duh.. its a scar, scars dont go away.

Its significance is definitely Scar from "The Lion King." John Locke is the villain.
