The Bar Scene

So, just after Jack leaves the church at the beginning of the episode, he goes to a bar, where he has a drink in front of him, but he doesn't touch it. What is the significance of this scene?

Also, there was a woman also sitting at the bar. Jack's phone rings, and when he goes to answer it, the camera angle shifts to a view where both Jack and the woman at the bar are shown. If you pay close attention, for a second the camera is focused on the girl sitting a few chairs down from Jack, and then the focus is switched over to him. Not sure if there is much significance to this, but I can't figure out why they would have the camera focus on her for a moment. Does this woman have a role in the story?
