I thought there was some significance in showing the opening scene over again at the end of the same episode (I know they do something similar in subsequent episodes, but this seemed like some sort of attempt to point something out)...with the slight variations, must mean something I just can't figure out what though!

I thought the scenes played different, but couldn't figure out exactly what was different.

I really doubt there was a hidden message in the opening and closing scenes.. I think as Lost fans we tend to overthink things.. some of these things mean something and some don't... I think this is the latter.. For instance the end of season 4 ended with the same scene from the end of season 3.. but they were obviously shot at two different times.. I don't think there was a hidden meaning in that.. just the fact that no matter how much they try, they can't always recreate a scene exactly.. Same goes for the opening and closing sequence of 316.. They probably did this in several takes and one take worked for one sequence and another for the other.. It's probably as simple as that.. Occam's razor and all that stuff..

Well, this all gets me thinking again about the Swan Station in season 2 - one day, the stereo is an old 70's looking thing, as well as the lamp on the table, and another day, it's a shiny silver modern stereo, and modern looking lamp. There were other things that also changed at the same time, though I can't remember them. Prop errors? Maybe, but simultaneous prop errors, and all at once? I dunno - slight dialogue changes, slight item changes.... oh yeah, and what about when Locke and (someone) are clearly running from a bear, and suddenly Hurley walks out of the woods - and there's no bear AT ALL. It's just gone. And when they say there's a bear, Hurleys like "What bear?".
You may be onto something here...

I have to be honest... I don't typically watch the episode for the small details (that what I have everyone in the Forum for!), but the differeing dialogue jumped out at me, too.  It would be very easy to just cut out the running and part of the swimming to cut down on time, but just tag extra dialogue / scene to the end if they were simply trying to save time.  I think there is some reason for the changes.

In the beginning we see Jack waking up...hearing Hurley's calls for help, jumping into the water to save him--and then rushing over to Kate.

Later in the episode...we see the same scene play out again--but it doesn't happen the same.  Did anyone else catch that?  The diologue is different.  I suggest you go back and watch it again if you didn't catch it the first time around.

I'm watching it again right now--so I'll type it out for you guys.

First Time:

Hurley: "Help, anyone! *other calls for help*Jack, help!"
(Jack runs through jungle, jumps off cliff into water)
Jack: "It's okay, it's okay....you can stand."
Hurley: "Oh--Oh my god, it really happened."
(Camera pans to Kate lying on the rocks.)
Jack: "Kate. (Jack swims over to her) Kate, Kate can you hear me?"
(Kate opens her eyes)
Kate: "Jack?"
Jack: "Are you okay?"
Kate: "Are we?"
Jack: "Yeah.  We're back."
Kate: "What happened?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second time:

Hurley: "Help!  Anyone, help!"
(The scene cuts to Jack jumping into the water)
Hurley: "Oh---"
(Camera pans to Kate lying on the rocks.)
Jack: "Kate.  (swims over to her) Kate?"
(Kate opens her eyes)
Kate: "What happened?"
Jack: "Can you get up?"
...conversation continues as we see the rest of the scene.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Now, before some of you say--"The scene was just cut down to save time, and as not to repeat everything we saw at the beginning of the episode".....

I ask you.....

Watch again...watch the scene at the beginning, and the one toward the end a couple of times.

I do realize that it is cut down.  We don't see Jack running through the jungle the second time.  I would explain more about where to pay attention--but you all are smart; I don't think I need to do that! Smiley

Anyway, let me know what you think!!!

i thnk this is a clever use of telling the story but not releaseing secrets.... just liek the opening scene in EXPOSE episode... doesnt happenthe way it did later.. the blurr some things for the later surprise

also in charlies death f;ash with the arrow doesnt happen the same either... only once were kyptronite sleippers were mentioned. i think its just clever uses  of story telling.

Kate's interaction with Jack is clearly different the second time around.

OK, I must be totally dense, but I'm still not seeing this.  What exactly is it that you guys are referring to that is so clearly different?  (I'm not trying to be rude or difficult -- I really don't see what it is you're talking about.)  In the dialogue that Hatch Monkey typed out, as well as when I re-watched it, it seems to me that all that is changed is the "Are we...?"  "Yeah, we're back" part.  That doesn't seem like such a dramatic change in interaction to me, but I could be wrong.  It seems like just a quick cut to save time.  This episode did go overtime by a minute anyway.

I guess I'm still missing the "where to pay attention" part...  Thanks in advance for any help pointing me in the right direction!

Look North!....no, okay, maybe that's not the direction you should be pointed in. lol

The 'where to pay attention' part that I was referring to was Jack, from the moment he sees Kate each time and his interaction with her.  Watch it a few times more, maybe something will stick out.  I'm going to do the same thing and pay extra attention to expressions and such.  Other people have mentioned other spots where this has happened and stuck out to them before..  I'm going to try to find those.

They just shortened that scene. Nothing different there.

I looked again, but I still don't see anything significant.  Sorry!

(And I even looked North!   Grin)

In Stephen King's Gunslinger series, Roland (main character) keeps reliving the same events over and over until he "gets it right," although the reader doesn't see that part.  Could TPTB be doing something similar with the slightly different scenes?    Huh

No, I'm pretty sure it was cut to save time and so we don't get really really bored. This kind of cinematography happens all the time. For instance, watch Vantage Point. A lot of things are cut when the viewpoints are switched.

There's no time loop. TPTB just didn't want us to get bored and leave the TV.

That is fair enough. I am with Madam P. I have rewatched and looked for something to jump out. I have been wrong before and I will be wrong again, but I don't think anything special is going on here.

Knowing tptb, we probably won't get an answer on this until next season.  Sad Huh Smiley
