Sound effects sometimes get recycled, and this particular scream was first used in the 50's.  Ben Burrt, a sound designer, came across it and kind of used it as his signature sound.  You can hear it in movies such as Star Wars, Space Balls, etc.  Kind of sounds like a "AhhAAAAhhh!"  Here's a pretty good youtube compilation of it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbYsoEasio
