I was watching this place is death and i noticed something during the smokey scene, smokey seemed a lot more violent and had a different sound, he also seemed to have a base in the temple, do you think that  something happened to smokey between 1988 to the present

Some one mentioned somewhere that in one or two frames Smokey looked like a dog with its ears laid back.  Anybody get that?  I can't really view my recording a frame at a time.

In the screencaps Sledge posted on the home page here, the fourth pic down (I think it was) looks to me like a three-headed dog, and yes, at least one of the dogs looks to have its ears laid back.  Check it out!

Yeah I also have some questions about Smokey

Did anyone get the feeling, right went it happened, that it wasn't Montand calling for help...... but Smokey?
That was Smokey luring the French team down there?
And that is Rousseau's The Sickness?  That Smokey either brain washed them or ........*sigh*......
I am a SCI-FI nerd mimicked them?

Yes!  They were either instantly brainwashed (how can it be that fast?) of it was Smokey!  I say it was the S-monster doing the old Saturday Night Live "Candygram" routine!!

But how do you explain the frenchmen:
a.) getting back to the surface alive - they weren't just Smokey playing them, since you could shoot them and kill them
b.) defending Smokey as not bad
c.) knowing he was "just a security system" - something we have heard by others
d.) acting nice but really wanting to kill Danielle, instead of taking her down to be brainwashed
It reminds me of Cindy.  We know that the Others employ brainwashing techniques, but these guys were instantly reprogrammed.

I can't see 3 dog heads in the pic, but yes...we already know that Smokey=Cerberus!  Pretty cool.

Maybe Smokey brainwashes them. Even though Ben tried to brainwash Carl by others means.

Look at the ABC logo as if it were a ball... see?  It's sitting on the end of the Labrador Retriever's nose!  And just above him and a little to the left is the Siberian Husky looking down and to the right, with his ears laid back.  And then to the right of both of them is... well, OK, so the third one looks more like a profile of Curious George.  But hey, it could be a dog.   Wink

So... is Smokey made by Dharma or the Army or is it some freaky island phenomenon that predates all of those?

I think Smokey possessed them (maybe after killing them). But it seems they still get to keep their memories, or at least part of them. Kind of reminds me of Christian, who apparently still calls Jack his son (therefore he's not just a manifestation of the island) but he obeys the island's agenda.

I don't think that they were Smokey. Maybe possessed by Smokey or brainwashed by Smokey, but not Smokey himself. I have a feeling that shooting Smokey wouldn't hurt him.
