Doesn't Smokey usually target people who have done really bad things in the past though??  I mean, the guy he killed tonight seemed like kind of a douche . . . maybe smokey could tell he was evil?
I think smokey also targets people who are a threat to the island. If you are a bad person, then what good are you bringing. Or if you're there to torch the island, like Keamy's men, then you're toast as well.

But Smokey only attacked Keamy's team when Ben called it, in response to Keamy killing Alex. So must it be summoned, or does it work on its own (Eko?), or maybe both?

I totally believe it was Smokey, and not Montand, calling for the rest of the team. Reminded me of Yemi calling Eko out to confess.

Yeah I also have some questions about Smokey

Did anyone get the feeling, right went it happened, that it wasn't Montand calling for help...... but Smokey?

That was Smokey luring the French team down there?

And that is Rousseau's The Sickness?

That Smokey either brain washed them or ........*sigh*...... I am a SCI-FI nerd mimicked them?

Much like that awful movie "The Ruins", The flowers sound like my cell phone? LAME

Whatever made Danielle's team "sick" was more than just a recruitment.  There's no way Robert would simply be convinced to kill the woman he loves and their unborn child.... no way.  Robert was able to act like nothing was wrong with him and plead for Danielle to put her gun down.  Then, pull his gun on her and attempt to kill her.  Funny how his gun jams though, huh?  Just like with Michael.  Like maybe the island had a further purpose for Danielle?

Shakey - the gun didn't jam.  In another thread Caylee pointed out that Danielle removed that firing pin from Robert's rifle. That was the same rifle Sayid tried to shoot her with in S1, she told him then that she did that.

Smokey definitely ripped the guy's arm off.  I told my brother it was going to happen and he was like how did I know that?  He doesn't remember old episodes or follow things like I do.  Anyways, you can see Smokey's "tendril" wrapping around the guy's arm.  I thought it was just going to rip off from the force of Smokey pulling on him as they hold on too.  But Smokey wrapped around it and ripped it off.

Yes!  They were either instantly brainwashed (how can it be that fast?) of it was Smokey!  I say it was the S-monster doing the old Saturday Night Live "Candygram" routine!!

But how do you explain the frenchmen:
a.) getting back to the surface alive - they weren't just Smokey playing them, since you could shoot them and kill them
b.) defending Smokey as not bad
c.) knowing he was "just a security system" - something we have heard by others
d.) acting nice but really wanting to kill Danielle, instead of taking her down to be brainwashed

Yeah, thanks.  I just found that out myself when I was checking Lostpedia episode summary for last night which linked me to the episode called Solitary where this was stated:
Sayid and Rousseau cross paths as Sayid is trying to escape. They point their guns at each other, and Sayid pulls the trigger. To his surprise, however, he finds that the firing pin has been removed. Danielle says that Robert never noticed it either, before she shot and killed him.

During that scene with the guy in the hole calling for help, I couldn't help but make jokes about Will Ferrell's character in the Austin Powers movies.

Did anybody else notice in some of the screencaps posted of Smokey when he is coming after the French guy, that it kind of looks like a hand coming out from Smokey?

Read the book, then watch the movie. Much better that way.

There was a book? They made this movie from source material? I thought someone just came up with the idea after smoking somthing and asked the studios for money.

It reminded me of the Steven King made for tv movie IT.

Well, it has been known to happen in nature, so it's not that far fetched of an idea.
