A constant is something that is familiar in the both times between which your consciousness is shifting.
Something that you really care about and exists in both times. You have to contact it in both times.
It doesn't have to exist in your future?

yeah but I think, what little I DO know about constants is that you have to have that feeling for the person now when they need it, in order for them to be your constant now.
Maybe this is why Dan professed his love for Charlotte at what seems the strangest of moments. Dan sees her with a nose bleed on the beach and begins to install himself as her constant. They have a "pre-island" past although not a strong one, a present and though not safe to presume but a future friendship/relationship. This meets his criteria for the role as someone's constant. Or not.

I would have thought so.

Well, seeing that as of "316", Ms. Hawking told Desmond that The Island isn't done with him yet and Faraday is still on The Island, sort of backs-up my theory that a Constant needs to be in your past, present and future.

I don't know, that's what Daniel told Desmond when he needed a constant.
He had to contact Penny in both times.

I saw that one of the coming episodes is called the variable.
That's the opposite of a constant.
